Re: Intake

Why yes, shaker hoods. They are awesome. Shaker hoods have always been way more of a Mopar and Ford thing, if you catch my drift. They look especially good on 99-04 Mustang GT's.

But, if you really want your hood to shake.. Jump on it!

Re: Intake

Well, if you try it, make sure you post some pictures. I wouldn't like to see that done on a Third Gen though. We have very good drag coefficients. Camaros have a drag coefficient of .34, and I believe the Firebirds are at .31 or .32. There's a guy on ecomodder who got his 1982 Firebird down to a .27 drag coefficient with some kind of "aero" wheels.

The farthest I will go towards messing up the low drag coefficients of a Third Gen are the SS hood. I love them, and they would not cause nearly as much drag as a shaker hood, which is designed to actually be functional.

Check out a few pictures of a Third Gen with the SS hood, you'd probably like it more than a shaker hood anyway.

Pictures below are from Hawks Third Gen Parts.

Re: Intake

Yea,I can't say I know that much about the drag stats, but I've seen the SS hoods before but I've just never seem to like them. I either wanted to try something different or get one of the Daytona Turbo Hoods which would really be easier and i wouldn't have to mess with my carb or air filter. My engine sits real high and i had to get the lowest profile filter i could find to fit under the stock hood.

Re: Intake

I've never seen one, thats kind of why i wanted to do it. I have never been able to find a kit specifically for a camaro. I figured I would just buy a T/A kit and try it that way.

Re: Intake

my filter doesnt fit under the hood. ive had a few ideas though of what to do . heres one of them , let me know what you think;

cut the hood so the cleaner fits on ( obvious) im gonna fab my own scoop with a flange on it. so i can put a rubber seal aroung the flange,, and drill a few holes around the flange. what i would like to do that i havent seen in tgo, is make the scoop removable for nice days and just have the cleaner stickin out, but when the weather isnt as good i can easily and quickly bolt the scoop back on ,with either pins or wingnuts. on the hood i would like to put rubber gromets in the drilled holes to keep em from rusting etc . the only thing im worried about is it lookin cool. what do you guys think of this idea

Re: Intake

Sounds good to me, and as far as it looking cool, if your making the scoop i would just look at some scoops i already liked and just try to kind of make one similar to it. I also thought about getting one of the butterfly carb scoops. I really like the way they look, and as far as the hood work its not that bad.

Re: Intake

the thing about shaker hoods, is that the shaker box is not mounted on the intake, it bolts above the intake, feeds into some plastic and rubber ducting down to a filter box on the frame rail, then up into the intake, there are hols in the bottom of the shaker box and air filter box for water to drain out, your method will end up with water in the engine when it rains

I guess the more I think about it the more problems I'm going to run into. I'm thinking its either going to be Turbo Hood or a butterfly vavle carb scoop...

Re: Intake

Ive seen a turbo hood but instead of having the hood louvers, they put plexy glass. It looked tight man. You can see down inside the hood and view the plenum. I thought it was nice. But them Daytona Turbo hoods are nice IMO.

OOps. It's been a while since I saw the Camaro with that Turbo hood. Well I found it and its not the plenum that you can see under the plexy glass, its the carb or TBI system that is visible. Anyway here is the link.... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...90-post93.html

Yea I saw the plexy glass hood on that blue camaro. But yea i freaking love the turbo hoods. If I do end up getting a Daytona Hood I'm totally going to do the plexy glass thing! I'm really undecided on it though. I really like the butterfly vavle carb scoop too though. I cant decide...

Re: Intake

Do what makes you happy man. It is your car and you'll be driving her around. Heres a good solution. Just browse around for the style of hoods already on other Camaro's. Make a comparison from a few that you like and decide on which would make you more happy. Another option is if you have money to spend, buy another hood with the other feature that you like. Just switch the hoods out when you want to. That way you'll have 2 hoods that you like. Just a thought.

Re: Intake

If I was able to push money out of my rear end, I would have 3 hoods; O.E.M. IROC hood with hood louvers, Daytona hood with louvers, and Daytona Hood with plexy glass see through. But I work at Target and haven't completed my degree of Computer Information Systems.

... I Like Your Style Bro. It's kind of like some of us low income peeps that make the minimum wage, live in a run down trailer and dump all of thier income tax money on a new car instead of lookin for a house. No offense to anyone though, I use to live in a trailer park as a child. I admitt though that my wife gave me a choice, either buy a used reliable car, or fix up my junk (my IROC). Of course my reply was I'll stick to my junk.

Re: Intake

there not that far offset only a couple of inches you could probably modify the scoop so it sit in the center of the hood
