Well now I have to do it...

So I finally got a third gen camaro and well I will just say its in rough shape. I have started stripping the body down to prep for paint and now I am wondering how the heck can I get the head light buckets out to gain a lil more access to the front bumper to fender bolts?? so here it is, I am not sure what color it will be but I am thinking black or blue to match the black and blue interior..what do all of you think of my recent trade??

Re: Well now I have to do it...

I plan to try my hand at repairing it but if that doesnt work I wll be buying a new one from rock auto for a mere 54 dollars and change so I am not terribly concerned with that my biggest issue is getting the darn thing off, I plan on painting the whole car piece for piece right down to inner fenders and under the hood so I really need the fenders off to get it all stripped.

It looks like a fairly solid starting point.

To get to the fender bolts go at them from underneath the car. Once you crawl under there you will see them.

As for the fender, save yourself a huge headache and just replace it. It will never be perfect again with all that damage.

Re: Well now I have to do it...

well, for right now I am not going for perfect, I just want it back on the road for this summer so I can have some decent wheels for the summer, my plans are to redo everything over the winter, but I have now got one fender off and I can say wow they did not make these fenders easy to remove there is alot of hidden bolts, the damaged fender in the picture I figured out looks like some one tried to remove it but neglected to remove all of the bolts and crinkled it trying to pull it off I have discovered large amounts of bondo on the fender in question so replacement seems to be the only way of fixing it at all, at least that is the worst damage on it, so I guess its time to start ordering parts and priminbg the quarters and doors and hood and bumpers while I wait for the new fender to come. Is there any where cheaper than rock auto to get the fenders they charge 54 a piece.

that sounds pretty cheap to me, my fenders for my 1st gen were 130-150 each but everything for that car was WAY more.

Wow, paying $60 for just one fender is a horrendous price compared to what I'm used to. My junk yard practically gives them away, I got 2 fenders for $20

Re: Well now I have to do it...

well, I am not lucky enough to have any pick a parts around here so I gotta pay a premium for my parts even used.. It is amazing how much they charge for parts around here back when I lived in the twin cities I could go to one of many pick a parts and some times they even had days where it was forty five dollars for all you could carry, it was amazing some of the stuff people could carry twenty feet

Clicky

I am ordering from those guys in a few days. Check their store if they have driver side. Free shipping might do it for me to give it a chance and hopefully it fights right.

$30 for a single fender is the cheapest here without environment and tax. Bad thing is there always bent or not as in good shape as I want them to be or just no third gens in the 5 yards I go to every week.

Keep up with the job and keep us updated 1986!

Re: Well now I have to do it...

well, today I thought I had all the rust taken care of and was getting ready to strip the interior and get that stripped down so it could also be painted and stumbled upon some pretty bad damage in the passenger front footwell. It seems that the floor pan rotted out over the top of the cat so either tomorrow or the next day when I have finished stripping the interior and cut out the bad spot and my nieghbor is going to weld in a patch panel so that is not costing me anything.. so so far my cost for the build is still at $0 and I have so far stripped the paint to a refinishable level, straightened one fenders dents started body filler work and have free primer and I am getting the primer sprayed free of charge I even got my tape for free to tape off the windows and t-tops so My build is becoming very budget friendly and I may be able to afford a decent stereo system following my engine rebuild and tranny swap.. so far my expected expenses are only around 400 dollars including a used tranny and engine rebuild kit and exhaust components..

Re: Well now I have to do it...

I'm assuming since your name is 1986V6 your have a V6. Are you switching out the V6 for another or are you upgrading? or are you just fixing up the one you have?

Re: Well now I have to do it...

Well for the sake of originality I plan on rebuilding the existing 2.8, I may put in a v8 at some point down the line but I would keep the 2.8 so I can swap it back if I so decide. I love the lines of this car and would really like the fuel economy of the v6 with gas prices as high as they are now.. But I do have a late 70's low mile 350 4barrel at my uncles place just begging for a stroker kit and ans a new home that isnt inhabbited by about 5million field mice but thats more of a project for this winter.. or I may sell the 350 and use the money to fund a turbo for the v6 I am yet to decide..
