how much paint do i need?

Hey guys, I'm gonna be painting my 91 TA 'vert soon and I was just wondering how much primer, paint, and clear coat i'll need. the local auto body supply shop is telling me that I need 3 quarts of each at least but I just wanna double check with you guys. I'll probably use 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, and maybe 4-5 of clear. What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Re: how much paint do i need?

the amount of primer depends on the amount of body work you are doing. are you making any repairs or sanding it down to the metal or just a color change. the guys at the paint shop should know how much you need.

Re: how much paint do i need?

well i'm just painting my car the same factory color. I only sanded it down to bare metal in some spots (dents and surface rust), here's a couple pictures I took with my phone today:

Right now it's sanded with 120 grit sandpaper on a DA but prior to laying down the primer I'll hit it again with 320 grit.

You might be able to get away with 2 quarts because its a convertible. Depends on the brand of paint and how well it covers.

Three quarts of each sounds about right. Its always good to have some extra paint. I always use a sealer just before my base coat, but thats just me.

You shouldnt need more than three coats of clear and the base all depends on how good it covers. Also it depends on if you are going to do a color change or using the factory color.

Re: how much paint do i need?

I already have a quart and a half of the basecoat. I'll get another quart and see how that works out. This paint isn't cheap (about 50 bucks a quart) so I'd like to avoid buying extra. I'll get 3 quarts of primer to make sure the car is totally uniform and covered prior to the paint. But I will need to paint the insides of my fenders and hood since those aren't original and they're different colors. How much paint did YOU guys use when painting your cars? Oh and is 320 grit on the body PRIOR to primer OK? Since I heard that 180 is good but the supply shop told me to use 320.
