Re: Custom Reverse Hood

Yours opens easier and smoother because its a fiberglass hood. Mine is the heavy stock steel hood. If I try to let it go while its parallel to the ground it will crash back down onto the fenders. And yes, I have the springs on it. I had also just gotten done with it and wanted to be gentle with it. Now, after 2 summers I can just slide it open easily and smoothly.

I had to modify the stops as well so the hood didn't hit the nose. Maybe the changes I made to the hinge are why I couldn't fit the TPI intake underneath the crossbar. I dunno. How much clearance do you have when the hinge in is the closed position?

It should be the same hinge, I ppulled it from the same year/make as you got yours from. Does yours flex at all when you open the hood? On my car it can flex side-to-side pretty good unless I lift from right in the middle of the hood.

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

and as far as flexing, like i say its super sturdy, i can stand on the side of the car and open it from the side with 1 hand easy. maybe my hinges are just in good condition?

Sorry, I saw the fiberglass where you were cutting the scoop and assumed the whole hood was glass.

Your springs must be stronger than mine then. I can't lift mine up from one side easily. I have to lift it from the middle. Where do you have the springs hooked? I think I may have cut off the original spring mount on the upper side when I modified the hinges.

I always lift from the middle anyway to avoid any tweaking.

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

Thanks for the pics. That is the same as how I have my springs mounted so my springs are probably shot.

I cut off the original stops and welded my own in to get the hood a little more vertical when open.

Have you checked clearance when the hood is shut with the top radiator cover bolted in place? That's where mine gets to tight to use the TPI intake.

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

these do work on firebirds same as camaro's i have a set i was playing with on my parts car before i scraped the parts car. it took some adjusting make it clear the bumper and the stop on the hinges and the back/top of the hinge had to be trimmed to allow the hood to close right. camaro's and firebird's are the same to the radiator core suport which is where these bolt on. eventualy i am gonna trim the hood and inner fender wells on my good 87 and bolt these in i already trimed my spare flat hood from the parts car and modified the hinges and it worked. and the inner fender wells need to be trimmed like lillee64 did. i dont have a camera anymore i sold it to pay the bills so sorry no pics yet. but i will get pics when i do it my good 87. the only things that i think will hit are the headlights when they are up. i already had the headlights out of the parts car so i wont know for sure till i try it on the good car. i think they might hit the hinge stop when going up and i dont think they will let the hood open all the way when they are up.

nice hood. I have the same set up on my 88 S10. I was thinking about doing that to my 88 Camaro along with shaving door handles and lambo doors.

I like it. I think it adds a touch of personality to it, and I may have to look for an 889 park ave to pull the hinges from... :P

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

Bump for an old thread, but questions.......

Do those slots in the fenderwells for the hinges allow a good deal of dirt &/or water spray up into the engine bay? A good solution would be to take the cut piece flipped over then welded back in in the wheelwell, but that could introduce tire interference issues.

As for retaining the back of the hood down. Anybody find a "stock Buick style" solution instead of hood pins?

And how would this work on a fiberglass hood, since they were not built with a steel support in the front to support the hood resting there?

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

I'm planing on doing a reverse hood,
my thoughts / plan was to use the stock hinges, but revers them to opposite, front side.
I think this way the hood would come up and forward and should clear everything.

I posted a video on YouTube shortly after I finished my hood. If you search my TGO username on there, you should find it easily.

Re: Custom Reverse Hood

How much room up front is left between the engine and fan assembly with this bracket in place? Room for an LS?

I have no clearance issues with a carb'd 350 with the stock electric radiator fan and shroud. I'm not sure how much bigger an LS is, so I can't accurately comment on that. Definitely isn't room for a stock TPI intake without major reworking or removal of the bar that runs between the hinges to stabilize them. That bar lays down right on top of the radiator fan shroud.

Sorry for the late replies to some of these posts. I'm not on here much anymore due to a bunch of different factors.

I didn't cut any holes in the fender wells for clearance. I just took a body hammer and worked them until the hinges cleared. Looking at the areas I had to massage, I don't think cutting holes would be much of an issue as long as you still had the stock plastic inner wheel well liners in place. They would cover up the holes pretty well.

I looked at reusing the stock hinges at first, but decided against it. There really isnt a good mounting surface at the front of the hood and I didn't feel confident in my ability to fabricate something or that there was enough room there for them.

I have thought about the rear hold down and the best I can come up with is some sort of pin or rail on the hood that slides into a slot at the top rear of the fender.

Fiberglass hood wouldn't work at all for this I don't think

I've seen a couple of them here on TGO and I've thought about doing it, but I have other, more pressing wants & needs to do, before I start modding the hinge system on my hood.
