Working on paint!

First off this is my first car I bought for 500$ before I could even drive. I've installed a 9bolt rear with disk brakes, WS6 sway bars, cat-back, 3.4V6 and rebuilt the top end with performance parts. I've done all the work to it myself and the only time the car has been in a shop was to be inspected. My dad has been a mechanic for almost 40years and has taught me a lot, I don't even let him work on it unless I really need help. I'll be getting my state inspection cert in September when I turn 18.(I've already took the tests for it in tech school but I cant be certified until Im 18.) I've also replaced almost all of the interior and its almost perfect except the carpet and the corner of my junkyard dashpad is cracked. Now its time for the body work, Im finally getting in gear on it so I can paint it. Im going all the body work and my dads going to spray it for me. Im going to use Summit single stage Gloss Black.

When I got it, it wasn't that bad. It was faded and starting to surface rust.

I added the lightning bolts with spray cans one day, thought it would look cool. It got old fast though.

Then I sanded and primed the front end and drove around like this for like 6 months.

Finally I put it my back yard and ground down all the rust and bondo'd it up then sprayed primer on the rest of the body.

I started fixing the rust on the passenger side door then realized it once had GFX had had 1/4in of bondo covering up the hole. I have a almost perfect door in my shed waiting to be hung and I also deleted the spoiler. I have tons of filler work left, fixing every scratch and chip. and I'm hand blocking out the whole car. Since it's going to be black I don't want any waves at all. I'll post more pictures tomorrow of all the filler I've laid. It's very time consuming laying very thin layers of filler, sanding, then laying more if needed.

Re: Working on paint!

Looks nice. Want to come up here and help with my mess? Lol.

Anyways, did your car have the high mount brake light under the spoiler (looks like it did by the pics but can't tell)? Would you be willing to sell parts of it or the whole thing? I'm doing the reverse, putting my stock spoiler back on (replacing the Z28 spoiler) and need the contact assembly and the plastic part that surrounds the actual brake light.

:edit: Isn't body filler great? I found about half to 3/4 inch of the crap slathered all over some problem in my pass side quarter that has rusted right out because of it, and still don't have even half of it off yet. Not to mention he drilled holes in the good part of the panel to use as retention holes for the filler .

Re: Working on paint!

It did have the spoiler with the third brake light, I have the plastic part that surrounds the light, but the light is broken and I have the switch that stays in the hatch if you want them.

I hate filler! The car was once hit in the driversdie rear corner and its about a 1/2in of filler. its horrible and i have to reshape most of it. Lucky for me there's little rust on the car. I just got a new welder so I'm going to buy a floor pan for the back seats that has a hole in it.

Re: Working on paint!

Would you be willing to sell the light surround and the contact piece? I have a working light, just no contacts and a broken plastic surround.

It's nice to hear I'm not the only one with a massive amount of filler on a quarter panel. You may want to check yours to make sure there isn't any way for water to get through the filler and attack the metal underneath, or your quarter will end up like mine is in my "Need an opinion: Worth the Cost?" thread. I'm stuck trying to find an entire replacement quarter (nice dents in the sail panel as well that the guy never quite filled in right), which is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. And the junkyards around here don't have anything relatively rust-free.

Back seat floor pan may be hard to find. I need one as well.

Re: Working on paint!

Sure I'll sell ya the stuff, I just have to make sure I didnt toss the contact peice, shoot me an offer though PM.

I've gone over it pretty well, I've used 3M seamsealer on just about every joint back there inside and out. There no serious cancer (cept the floor) its mainly surface rust that I just grind off and spray. Body work is pain in the ***, I have ALOT of respect for guys (and women) that do it for a living. I've only done some and I never want to do it again, but it will all be worth it in the end especially knowing i did it myself.

I hear you there. Especially with my mess. Hopefully, my "rust-free" Southern car will actually be rust free again. Did you get the seam sealer in the caulk tube? How much did you use? Although, I'm sure you've used way less than I plan to use (every bit of the factory seam sealer wax junk is coming out and being replaced with stuff that works and isn't so sticky and gooey).

lol mechanic work is pain in the ***. body work is simple and it's a general plan. with mechanic work, you get some sort of trouble no matter what you try to do.

Have to disagree with you there... Pulling the body parts just to get at the parts I need to get at to remove the quarter left me a whole bunch of broken bolts and other problems I may not be able to fix. Was supposed to be a simple sand and paint... Didn't turn out that way. Mechanics may be frustrating at times, but body work gives me a brain cramp.

lol yeah its simple if you go by the phrase "it is what it is" lol and BODY WORK is more to it than just removing panels and sanding is like saying mechanic work is easy just because you do oil change and spark plugs

Re: Working on paint!

depends if you're doing a collision repair, a small repair or repaint. general mechanic work even if it's not a rebuild is a frustrating job.

It was in a caulk tube, I used about half of it, I gobbed it on heavy and just sealed the hatch corner areas.

I also have to disagree. I find mechanics easy myself. Troubleshooting can be the pain part, anyone can change parts but finding whats broke can be a challenge. Body work is more labor intensive and has to be perfect. I was taught if you can feel it you can see it and you have to have a feel for it. I'm still learning the "feel" of it but I still wouldn't want to do it again.

Anyway I had to move her out of the backyard to do some yard work and because we're having a July 4th party but heres some pictures of her butt in my friends driveway.

Re: Working on paint!

Started doing work again, its been in and out of the 90's outside almost everyday. I took advantage of some cool night air and worked in my garage from 10pm to 12pm. (Note to self: tell parents you are in the garage first so they don't end up locking you out of the house and you having to call them at midnight asking for someone to let you in) I found the rust I didn't want to find on the driver-side a-pillar. Its not that bad but I have to grind and fill with body filler . Also been working on getting the A/C working again. Its nearly impossible to find compressor seals.

Re: Working on paint!

Fixed the corner of the driver side window that was cracking. I ground it down then filled it with 3M body epoxy then some body filler over it. Also fixed the A/C finally!

Spoiler delete is complete.

Re: Working on paint!

Looks like fun man, I remember when I first started putting my 1991 together. My dad bought if for me wrecked when I was 14 (11 years ago) with the plan of us fixing it together. It took a lot of time and a lot work, but we got it done. It was my baby for the longest time till I wrecked the dang thing 3 years go. I am just finally getting around to working on it again. I bought a 92 with a blown motor for the body parts, so hopefully mine will be in primer like yours by this spring. Good luck with the project.

Thanks, this project is really a learning experience for me. I hate body work, but I like to learn everything I can. It's always fun to step out of your zone and learn new things.

Yeesh! That A-pillar looks a lot more nasty than my whole windshield bow does, and I thought mine was rusty.

I'm hoping to get the ball rolling on the quarter next week, when the batteries for my saw show up. Going to be fun...

Got paint some paint laid! On the bumpers and hatch!
Theres some dirt in the paint and some orange peel but the picture makes it look worse then it is. With some wet sanding the paint will be like a mirror, the whole car "should" be done by tuesday. We're painting alittle at a time to keep over spray down.
