What type of paint to use and where to buy it?
What type of paint to use and where to buy it?
What type of paint should I use to paint my TA? Acrylic Enamel, Urethane, Acrylic Lacquer, Base coat/Clear coat, Water-based, etc. Not sure what is currently used, but I want to match it.
Also, can I use grey etch primer if I'm painting black, or should I use grey primer?
Where can I buy the actual paint. I'm buying the primer from eastwood, but would like to buy the aerosol paint can. (Only painting the trunk lid, and dont have the tools/compressor quality for a whole paint kit)
Paint code: WAL8555 and U8555 (Black)

If your not taking it down to steel, don't use etch primer, etch primer is only used when your taking it down to steel. You could also you epoxy primer if your taking it down to steel. Anyhow, any good urethane primer would be fine (gray is fine).
As far was "what type" it depends how much your wanting to spend on paint. Acrylic Enamel is good stuff.....but you really have to keep up with it....keeping it waxed and polished all the time or it will chalk out on you. It used to be popular.....but not much anymore. BUT it is pretty cheap.
As far as Lacquer....I'm not even sure if you can even get it anymore....I know around here, it's very hard to find. Not very many at all shoot it anymore....a thing of the past for sure.
Base/Clear is what everyone pretty much shoots now. It's fairly easy to shoot, very fast drying time, a good over all paint. It is more expensive though. There are many companies that make automotive paint (different lines and qualities as well), your best bet would to go to your local body shop supplier and ask them what your wanting to do with your car.
I honestly don't know much about the whole "water bourne" system yet.
I just kind of went through the tip of the iceberg with a few things.....there is alot to know about painting. Maybe someone else has will have some more input as well.

Re: What type of paint to use and where to buy it?
Thanks. I actually went to automotivetouchup.com and got my paint color WA8555 already mixed into an aerosol can, and also got a clearcoat aerosol, since the area is very small i'm working with (trunk lid area below window), and don't have a good air compressor or the proper equipment, i figured i'd go with this and see how it works.
I spoke with someone at Eastwood, and they told me that the rust encapsulator is fine as a primer coat and that I could just go over it with the paint, so we'll see. I'm hoping to tackle this project next weekend and i'll keep everyone posted.
