not sure which hood i wanna get

i'm kind of stuck on 3.

i want a 82-83 functional Z28 hood because of just that, and the fact that the hood is lighter.

i wouldn't mine a fiberglass cowl hood, nothing too major, 2 1/2 inches or so, then with this hood, i'd be able to get straight racing stripes.

and then theres the sasquatch hood i've always yearned for the daytona iroc hood.

which one do you guys think?

i dont think they make reproduction of the 82-83 Z28s, do they?

Re: not sure which hood i wanna get

Yeah personally as cool as the cowl and IROC hoods are I would go with the functional Z-28 hood. Just because it would free up 50-100 pounds (depending on what you have now) and the fact that it is functional will help keep the engine from coming close to overheating.

Re: not sure which hood i wanna get

If you can find an true fiberglass/functional early z hood in good conditon, most defintly grab it or theres an member on here (do an search on fibeglass iroc hood) that he makes and sells fiberglass iroc hoods and carbon fiber iroc hoods (he runs i think around 600 for the fiberglass with the glass weight around 30lbs and the carbon around 20lb)

I messaged him about doing what needs to be done to make them functional (not the louver parts though, just the actual metal) and he said he possibly could do it so defintly shoot him an PM.

But anyhow there defintly an great way to loose weight and early z and iroc hoods always look great!

If you have decent fabbing skills,it's pretty easy to make
the non-functional carb SMC hoods functional-just build
an airbox underneath to mate to the aircleaner, remove
the fake louvers, cut out the material behind...
-did this with my '82 back when it was still carb, worked
great but without any flaps and open all the time, had
some carb icing problems under certain cold weather
conditions.

Re: not sure which hood i wanna get

yeah even though i like the cowl hoods and everything, i want it to still look like a Z28, other than the badges.

do you know how much the functional ones go for? or even where i can find a fiberglass Z28 hood?

i actually thought about making mine, somewhat functional.
i would take the 2 louvers off, then cut the area open, then put foam or weather stripping on the louvers, and just take them out on sunny days.

Re: not sure which hood i wanna get

Never looked at one close, but probably could make a
steel z28 hood functional using the same method
When i made my SMC hood functional i did make some
grilles for the openings-out of the honeycomb pattern
material found under a fiero engine cover, expanded
metal material cut from a used truck air filter might
look good too.
When i modified my air cleaner,i got a cover with raised
center from a caprice and cut off the outer part past
where the filter seals, then rigged the the airbox to
seal against the air cleaner base with the hood closed
(was really looking for an'80-81 z28 air cleaner but
could not find one-that would have been perfect!)
BTW this setup really let out the quadrajet intake
noise nice
