Paint prep

Hey guys, I'm about to start the body work on my 84 trans am that is factory red with silver on the bottom. I would like to paint it red again so I don't have to fight the door jams. Should I strip it down to bare metal to get ready for paint? Is there a better tool for removing paint than a wire wheel on a grinder?

Thanks

Dustin

Re: Paint prep

I would never remove undamaged paint. Unless you have a LOT of rust, or the grey e-coat is peeling, you don't really want to strip it.

One thing to watch for is small pits from surface rust. They will cover up but come back to haunt you. Good luck, I'll help you as much as possible but you really need someone to SEE the car that knows what to do.

Re: Paint prep

I have a small 2"x3" pitted spot above the passanger side rear wheel well. Is there a way to make it look good without a new patch? Other than that the cars pretty solid. I've sprayed a bunch of times, but never on a car that I had to do the body work on.
