Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

Okay. Ive got an 87 iroc and the door got dented. Picked up a 86 iroc door and the gap between the door and rear quarter will not close up. Its not horrible but noticeable if you compare it to the pass side door. I noticed that there really isnt any adjustment for the door. What can i do? new door hinges?

okay fyi. Not all door hinges fit all cars. The 86 door hing bolts are closer together then the 87. The front bolt hole is 1/4 of an inch closer to the rear

Interesting. Did you correct it? I was going to suggest elongating the mounting holes.

Best I remember there was one bolt hole that was round with no adjustment in the top hinge. It was almost like GM drilled each hinge just for that car. I do remember that new hinges for other GM's at that time didn't have the hole drilled at all. I'd open up the one with no adjustment which ever way it needed.

yeah. the door just isnt going to fit right. I dont know if the hinges are bent or what. Nothing lines up. I took the holes out longer and bigger and still no better. The gap on the quarter is way better but now the lower front gap almost hits the fender. I hate GM!

Re: Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

That should be easily adjusted by moving the bottom of the fender forward slightly. If you get the rear of the door, at the quarter fitting well then just adjust the fender to the door. Could the door be down or the fender be up at the hinges? If you raise the door hinges it may mess your quarter gap by opening the gap at the bottom of the door at the quarter. Check the bottom of the fender for jack damage. When they get jacked up there it really messes up all gaps in the fender.

I put a 92 door on my 89 and the dang thing would bind up when closed, when you pulled the door handle up the door would pop open! Cool but thats not supposed to happen so I had to get another set of doors.

you gotta fit the panels to things that you cant change. ie quarter pannel and rocker. once you get them gaps to your specs then adjust the fender. best bet is to pull the fender. go from the quarter panel forward... a tape measure can be your best friend

Re: Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

I put a donor door on my 86 trans am and it fit like a glove. Only reason for it not to is if your car is tweaked or if you are lining it up wrong/bad door. Gotta line it with the quarter panel first. Then adjust the front fender to fit the door....NOT the door to fit the fender. Chances are the front fenders out of whack slightly as well.

Re: Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

I put a used door on my 83 fire bird and it fit as badly as the old door. I opened up the hinge holes so thatthe door could be lifted up and the gaps worked out nice.

Re: Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

I've put a 1990 door on my 84, it lines up perfectly and doesn't touch the fender when I'm opening it. It's roughly installed with only two bolts just to test fitment, but the hinges look indentical.
The main difference I could notice between the two doors, are the inner braces : on early models, it's a heavy stamped brace, on later cars, it's a tubular brace. There are also a few minor changes in the interior panel.
You must have a problem with the pillar.

Re: Door gaps...donor door doesnt fit..

I did find a rust problem with the post, but it was not related to the door gap problem. the original door and the replacement door had big gaps at the top front and back. small gaps at the bottom front and back. due to the shape of the doorends ( ) like that the doors being to low caused the gap problem. I lifted the doors on both sides and now have good gaps.
