Rear unibody rust repair
Rear unibody rust repair
ok.. i just got a 1987 camaro. ive done quite a bit of mechanical work on it, heater core, starter, alternator, etc... now im ready to get started on the outside of the car. the only problem is the rear wheel wells are pretty rotted out. i was wondering if theres a way i can buy a rear unibody and replace it, or like a rear quarter panel that i could weld in. its my first time working on anything like this so any advice would be helpful

Keep digging. You've surely not found all of it. Get under the car and take out the interior also. Keep it on the road if you can but do so safely, be sure the rockers and frame rails are good before you sink alot of time into a quarter. You need much more I'm afraid. Good luck with it and post some more pics when you get the interior out if you can.

This is why I'm glad I live in the northwest. My uncles 82 Z28 sat out in the rain with no cover on it for 5 years and it had only small surface rust on a few spots

One bad thing with most of these cars was the paint delamination deal. A lot of cars were repainted under the warranty recall. Some got better than factory paint jobs while others got less, some much less. There was a F##d dealer close to me back then that was stripping the clear or paint then painting over what was left. With no sealer for adhesion it was peeling off again in less than a year. The dealership closed the body shop. I was at the GM dealer and got to pull a job straight out of their shop with the Chevy wrecker. Didn't take long to get out of there. LOL

yea my car sat out in the iowa weather uncovered for about three years and the wheel wells are totally f$$$d. can somebody tell me, are the rocker panels spot welded on? i need to take them off to see how bad it is underneath them. also... ive got a hole that i could probably climb thru where my spare tire is. any suggestions on that?

Rockers are spotwelded in. Sounds like you've got a major project. You may want to check for donor car or maybe one in better shape. JMO
