Dent and broken part fix.

Hi, This is my first post on this here wonderful forum, I am the owner(or soon to be Owner) of a '86 IROC-Z28.
I have a few questions.

There is a bad dent and scratch on the back left Quarter panel after an old lady hit it pulling into a parking space, it isnt a really deep dent but it is noticeable with the big paint chip, I wanna know what is a good way to remove a dent and to get the paint back in a area when I have custom paint?
There, is also a deep scratch on the right front "Wheel well?" that is bad and I want removed.

I'm also missing a hood louver and wondering if anyone here knows where I could get one for cheap.

Pics below.

Re: Dent and broken part fix.

For the hood louver try ebay, the classifieds here, Thirdgen Ranch, or Hawks Thirdgen.

Doesn't appear to be any creased metal on the dent pic - have you tried a dent puller? Auto parts store sells one in a box for about $20, uses hot glue (comes with gun, glue, everything). Glue these tips to the dent, when it dries put a handle thing on it, and turn **** - dent pops out. Then you can use rubbing compound to get the streak out. You'll want to sand down where paint chipped off so it's feathered, and then spray with a primer so that it doesn't rust until you get to the custom paint process. Then the body shop doing the paint can attend better to the dent if need be when they prep the car.

Re: Dent and broken part fix.

take the interior trim off where the dent is and try to bang it out with your fist.

I wouldn't worry too much about the paint. It looks like old enamel that is starting to haze from the sun anyway.

Re: Dent and broken part fix.

I plan to do what newbie said, I talked it over with my fasha and he said its a good idea since we got money.
I'm probably gonna go to "pull 'a part" and see if there are any usable louvers there.

Re: Dent and broken part fix.

Note - most all used louvers will be missing some of the plastic studs. If they are all in tact, then your looking at nearly $200 for a set. Might get a good deal at a local yard though.

Alot of us will take 5-minute epoxy, and glue bolts in place of the broken studs, then use nut under the hood. You want to use alot of glue, and get it over the bolthead so it holds fast and good. Of course you want to cut the old plastic stud off flush and rough up the area so the glue holds better.

Good luck! And welcome to TGO!

Re: Dent and broken part fix.

The dent puller for $20 will not work on a dent that is larger than the tool itself! Don't waste your money. Also, don't waste your time doing the hack job of pounding it out with your fist.

The dent is held in place by a high spot applying pressure to the edge of the dent. If the paint isn't really damaged and that's just transfer from the other car, have a professional PDR person fix it. Sometimes you can remove the tension that's holding the dent in place and the center of the dent will lift out without any trace. If you pound it out with your fist, you'll cause it to look worse with potential waves in the panel. If the paint is actually chipped in that area, then use a hammer and dolly and rework the metal to smooth it before you repaint it. The edges will need to be sanded smooth so the new paint will lay flat and provide the best finish.

I was waiting for you to chime in Scott!

Yep, I agree with Scott 100%
Looks like there are some pretty good size crowns with that dent.....and with crowns...come pressure.
