Why is it that only the bird's got the special editions? Firehawk, Turbo, Dayton not that I'm complaining.
I personally have never seen a woman driving a 3rd gen period not that they don't. Mostly v6 4th gens.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
I had a guy at a parts counter talk to me about how much better his Iroc was versus my GTA. Needless to say, I don't buy from him anymore. Why? I don't give a rat's butt about which car is better, but this is a Thirgen website. To start calling out that one variety is better than the other does not do our cars or this website any good.
Doesn't matter Camaro vs Firebird vs Mustang vs Challenger......
Our days are numbered and we (as performance enthusiasts) had all better stick together.

I think you've got Firebirds confused with Mustangs!
Burt Reynolds and James Garner weren't girls by the way...and I don't know any girls driving firebirds personally, but do know some with Camaros.
I think they are both great cars,I just prefer the looks of the Trans am.

"Here's how it works: The Firehawk is available through your local Pontiac dealer by merely picking out a Trans Am coupe (with or without the Formula option) or convertible and breathing into the salesperson's ear the magic code: WU-6. In one of the most clever and intelligent marketing moves in recent years, SLP has infiltrated Pontiac's order system and gotten itself assigned a General Motors Regular Production Order (RPO) code"
Isnt the firehawk "just a rpo" code as well?

RPO code the 91-92 Firehawks, which only 25 were made, had was B4U. B4U was considered a performance package.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
Camaro's are nice, but Firebird win the style contest. On the outside they're smoother with that long nose and the hidden headlights. From the rear the Camaro didnt have the good taste to put its lisence plate down low and out of view, the Firebird did.
The camaro loses the interior battle more than any other. What is with that square pillow in the middle of the steering wheel? And then the long expance of flat black plastic that goes all the way to the other side of the car? UGGGLY! The firebird has nice big gauges that go 2/3 of the way accross the dash, then a leather pocket to hide the cheap plastic that GM used. This kept the dash broken up and not plain looking. Plus the Birds stuck with a classic 3 prong steering wheel, much better than the Camaros square 80's design...

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
Ever since buying my 1989 Camaro I considered the front of the Firebird better looking, and the rear of the Camaro better looking.
Now, 2 years later, I kind of got used to the Camaro front, and I've seen so many Firebirds I also quite got used to the Firebird rears.
If I had to pick an overall winner in the style department, right now I'd say a 1982-1984 Camaro.
I guess if I would stand in front of an early 3rd gen Firebird I'd still buy it in a heartbeat, without even thinking "Camaro".
As far as convertibles go, the only 3rd gen I like as convertible is the 1991-1992 Firebird. Then again, I could not convince myself to buy a convertible. Not enough sun over here in central Europe and far too much rain to really make a convertible enjoyable.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
I don't care for the front bumper with the 3 holes in on the 82-84 Camaros.
I also didn't care for the bumpers on the late 80s base Firebird and Formula.

I LOVE my convertible FIREBIRD (to bad it WAS a 3.1 NOW its a L98 WS6!) the 91-92 Firebird convertibles look somewhat like a Vette THAT HOLDS KIDS (the only ones that fit in the back) IN THE BACK! Plus I see LOTS of convertible Camaros and VERY few Firebirds here in socal

Any Firebird with the steering wheel mounted audio controls have four spoke steering wheels. That "pilow" is the air bag.

I think they are both good looking cars other then the hatch back never got over that iI think if you are looking for a sports car look then you should get a Firebird if you are looking for a more muscle car look then get the Camaro after all they are about the same under the skin are they not?

One of the Ugliets steering wheels ever! Plus you can see the start of the plain, flat, cheap, black plastic that is 2/3 of the dash. They couldnt have even added a curve or design. Just flat. black. plastic.
The 91-92 wheels of both Camaros and Firebirds were nice. Had airbags and good heft, a much more modern wheel.

Am i the only one that LOVES the camaro dash, the big open space. It looks very unique, Even matches the long flat dashpad.
Guess I'm just a minimalist. Much prefer it to the ugly kangaroo pouch some of the firebirds have on the right side of the dash, Looks like something that belongs in a safari vehicle lol.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
Well, I wouldn't mind if Camaro's also had that pouch, maybe even as an option. I think it looks rather appropriate there.
Still, I have a 1989 Camaro, so with the rally style dash, rather then the cockpit style of the 1990 and later Camaros or the fighter plane style as seen in the Firebirds.
I really like the dash, and even though I am considering Autometer gauges at some point, I would still aim for the same dashboard layout. I just think it looks really basic and business like.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
I almost bought a new '78 TA for $9000 but the Z28 was about half the price. I liked "The Bandit" car but not at that price. Finally bought a '79 Z28 new for $5500.
My first muscle car was a '68 Camaro with 327 FI and powerglide. Sold it for $700 in '75.
Current ride is a '92 Z28

I loved Camaros, Firebirds and Vettes since I was 15. Camaros have been what I've always bought because they were less expensive.

82-90 I defiantly prefer Firebirds. 91-92 I prefer Camaros. I absolutely do not like the "banshee" look of 91-92 Firebirds.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
I really love both Firebirds and camaros. I feel like Firebirds are more meant to be sports cars, and camaros more muscle. Like adding rally stripes to a camaro looks fine, but its hard to make them look good on a firebird IMO. After dealing with both cars, i absolutely love my Trans Am,but i would love the center console from a camaro in my car, as well as the high rise spoilers. Ive also always loved the sleek look of Firebirds. The aerodynamic shape i think is just awesome. And when its black like mine and you drive around at night, you just look like a total badass haha

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
I love the flat, plain plastic mid-80s Camaro dash, especially with the orange-fade Z28 IROC-Z badge. It reminds me of '80s hi-fi stereo components. These cars wouldn't look right with some elaborate molded design all over the interior when the exteriors were so direct and straight-edged.
The only dash I like more would be the '80s c4 Corvettes.
I don't care about the steering wheels because on a non-airbag car, it's $50 to put a brand-new one of your choice on, and the first upgrade I made even though I got the O.K.-looking stock wheel that roboticjunky posted.
Externally. if these cars are really nice, with high-gloss paint, t-tops, racing seats, spotless rims etc, the Firebird looks significantly better. Like a true sportscar. where as the Camaro can look like some "duded up" economy car in the same scenario.
On the other hand, a cheap, beat-up Firebird is possibly the ugliest car on the planet. And the rounded-off early 90s "facelift" 3rd gen firebirds look hideous to me.
The Camaro is opposite, it has the muscle car look instead of the sports car look so its almost like the more scratches and dirt it has on it the meaner and faster it looks.
Overall, I have an IROC and love how mine looks, but the Firebirds before the "facelift" have the slight edge because of all the cool options and packages, the digital gauges, turbo v6 that was rated as the fastest production car in the US in '89, having a giant gold bird on your hood, etc...
It's almost a tie though.
Now if we weren't limiting this to 3rd gens and we were talking about all generations Firebird by far.
1st gen both looked good.
2nd gen firebird was maybe the best looking most iconic car ever.. anywhere .. for any price. camaro played 2nd fiddle.
4th gen both were ugly early on but looked good in the late 90s/early 200s after the visual updates but the trans am looked like a trans am and the camaro looked kind of importish.
the 5th gen camaro looks like a beached whale. they did unrepairable damage to the camaro legacy. that car is just huge and cheesy.
The only dash I like more would be the '80s c4 Corvettes.

Re: Firebird vs. Camaro which do you prefer?
Voted Firebird.
The exterior for each is a coin toss. 82-84, I'd give the nod to the Camaro. 85-90, Firebird. 91-92, Firebird by a lot. The Z28 was such a huge disappointment to me after the simply stunning IROC.
Interiors? Firebird by miles! The Camaro is just horrendous. I could live with the bland, uninspired design, but the almost Soviet quality interior plastics are terrible. Not that the Firebird is any award winner, with the silly grid pattern stickers and the simply odd pocket on the dash.
