Re: t top glass replacement?

Everything attaches to the glass - most of it glued on. There's really no way to change only the glass part. But the only thing really seen is the black plastic cover and handle, which is easily swapped.

Now, having said that, 1992 car should be the plastic top, not glass - unless it's been swapped already for glass tops. But no difference in the construction. You can esily swap locks and the black plastic and handles out between two tops.

Re: t top glass replacement?

If you manage to get the glass out I am very interested in how you did it. I have been thinking about buying another set, remove the glass, use it (glass) as a form to make replacement replacement "glass" out of 100% carbon fiber.

Re: t top glass replacement?

Yes my car has the acrylic tops. Unfortunately my car got broken into and the jackasses broke my door window and left my t top unlatched and it flew off when I was driving to work. It cracked the outer black plastic strip that is closest to the door glass causing it to leak. I've tried a few tops from the 80s and none seem to fit right I'm assuming because the pins are smaller. I was at the JY yesterday and found a 91 camaro with glass tops and the correct pins but somebody broke the glass out of one so I need to replace it. It seems impossible to find 91-92 third tens around here.

Re: t top glass replacement?

The earlier glass tops fit fine - they just need adjusted. I have glass tops from a 1986 car in my 1992 car, to replace the crackled plastic tops. The actual pin size is the same, it;s just that the plastic tops had an extra plastic sleeve on the actual pin, which is inconsequential to it's fit and function. You just need to readjust the 'holes' in the car that the pins go into - under the A pillar and B pillar plastic trim, each 'hole' has bolts to loosen and adjust the fitment of the tops with.

Re: t top glass replacement?

i have a 92 firebird and also have the plastic ttops but want the glass ones...i have a set of 88 camaro ttops and they fit fine except when i close them it pulls the pins in so that theres a gap on one of the ends..when i did that with the plastic there was no pulling or gaps..i only assume its because of the extra sleep on the pin..i tried to swap the plastic and all but it seems that i cant because the holes where the pins go through on the top are diff sizes...is there really a way to switch the pins or be able to put the extra plastic sleep on the glass tops?

Re: t top glass replacement?

i have a 92 bird with lexan tops but i swapped them to glass a few weeks ago. 92s have large pin latches while the glass ones off an 87 that i had were small pin. I used a 3/4 drill bit to make the hole bigger for the large pin on my glass top. everything else bolts up.

Re: t top glass replacement?

Um, guys, it literally takes 10 minutes to swap out the top latches (on the body)... 2 nuts each, after you drop the edges of the headliner. Shouldn't be any issues if you grab the latches with the tops.

I had the set off of my 87 up for sale a while back but nobody bit, so they got tossed... I have seen them on eBay, though, and there are people parting on here as well.

i tore apart one of my lexan tops and the pins itself is one whole piece so i have to completely tear apart everything on the glass tops plus drill a hole big enough for the large pins..i dk how anyone would do it in 10 mins..would a glass shop be able to do this cuz i rlly dont want to eff up the glass top

what do you mean re-adjust the holes in the car? could you post a pic of which and how they need to be adjusted?

It's possible as long as your car doesn't have the hook-style top retention (early thirdgens).

Re: t top glass replacement?

not sure. I have lexan but am in the middle of swapping to glass. I sold a pair of glass ones for 80 bucks a few months ago. No scratches or anything with the keys. The price is totally up to you.

Yes. Each retainer is held on by 2 10mm nuts. Probably best to mark them first so you know which one goes where.

but what am i supposed to do to the retainers? the glass pins go in the holes but when i lock them theres a gap on the side where the visors are on the headliner but the other end is secured tight and once i close the latch it pull to one end(opposite of the visor side) so how can i adjust the retainers so that there is no pulling to one side

Remove the a-pillar trim piece. Underneath you'll see the plastic piece with a hole in the center that the pin goes thru. There are two screws on the outside of the plastic piece that you can remove and rotate to adjust the location that the pin will go into. Once you have it adjusted as you want either drill new holes for the screws or just reinsert the screws using a drill with a socket on it. The screws are self-drilling and tapping. Then reinstall the a-pillar trim piece.

Re: t top glass replacement?

I think he's talking about front-to-rear alignment...

Not really much to do about that since a lot of that has to do with the weatherstrip along the roof line. But, you can, hopefully (if you don't have the later style tops that have the strip glued on) adjust the top strip to help keep the top centered as it locks down against the body strips.
