Re: Help bad leak!!!

new weather strip? the weatherstrip doesnt need to do much towards preventing water from entering under the rear glass on these cars though. maybe a rust condition hidden somewhere? had a load of rust hidden on the top of the wheel well on the rears, found it cuz one day my stuff in the back was always wet and the window was constantly fogged when it rained. turned out the water was being thrown from the tires up into the car through the large rust hole. its since been repaired

Re: Help bad leak!!!

I just replaced the back glass on my camaro. Not complicated but not a lot of fun either. You're going to need an extra set of hands and some fine wire in addition to your screwdriver, sockets and windshield butyl(stuff that they use to install windshields). You can leave the hatch on or take it off, your choice. Take all of the trim pieces off of the underside of the hatch. There are 4 bolts that hold the spoiler to the glass. If you leave the hatch on, loosed but don't remove yet. Use a putty knife to push through the existing seal to get a hole started. Thread the wire through and use it to saw the spoiler off of the glass. Guitar string works really well. Oh, yeah, remove the 4 screws holding the side molding to the spoiler. You will need to remove the hatch supports and prop it up. This is why I recommend removing the hatch. It gets difficult supporting it while you work. Anyway, once you have it apart, clean the old seal off. Mineral spirits dissolves it pretty well. Napa carries the butyl or you can get it online. Get the primerless if you can find it. Just a word of warning, this stuff is very sticky and it can only be removed with mineral spirits. You will get it on you. If your hatch spoiler doesn't line up, this is a good time to fix that. Before you take anything apart, measure how much you need to move the spoiler and mark it with tape. We you re-assemble, line it up to your marks. Put a pretty thick bead of butyl on the spoiler and re-assemble. Let it cure for a couple of days before you expose it to weather.

This sounded a little eratic, but I've only done it once and my memory isn't the greatest. Let me know if you have any questions or need clarification.

Steve

Re: Help bad leak!!!

best suggestion i can give without seeing this happening is to remove as much trim as you can and investigate. possibility that the gasket on the spoiler is no good and water is coming in through the holes for the bolts. again i dont know because im not sure what trim piece youre talking about, im assuming its on the underside of the deck lid and that is really the only thing i can think of
