Transmission problem?

Car: 1989 Camaro RS
Engine: 2.8L V6
Transmission: W/C T5
Transmission problem?
My RPM gauge twitches out between 2500 and 3500rpms. and the whole car starts to sputter. As far as i can tell, it only does this in 1st gear. I'm not much of a mechanic, at all. But can anyone tell me, based on my crude description, what the problem might be?
