Is this a good spray gun?

Im going to be painting my car very soon. My dad said I could use his compressor and spray gun. His jeep came out pretty nice, a little orange peely but he said he didnt sand it much. He just did it enough so the paint could stick.

So I checked out the gun he has and this is it. And heres the description of it.
"Ideal for professional auto body shops, commercial paint shops and the serious do-it-yourselfer. Operates with minimal overspray. Tip openings and needles have been enlarged.
Plus the spray cap has more and larger holes to create a high-volume, low-pressure spray. It's friendlier to the environment, plus there's less wasted paint. One-quart capacity. Requires 7.0 SCFM at 40 PSI. See Spray Gun Terms Note. Warranted."

So will this be good for me? Im going to paint my car by myself (first time) in my garage. And what is SCFM?

Or do any of you have a better recommendation? Any advice helps. Thanks.

Also, I know the compressor has to do with the job as well. I will get specs on the one he has and post them up in a while.

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

Google "HVLP gravity feed" with a 1.3 or 1.4 tip. Most of these guns won't cause a compressor to lag. Please make sure to practice on something else before spaying your car. Painting with good technique and achieving good results take practice.

Most hvlp guns require over 12 cfm. If your compressor is small you might want to look at lvlp guns

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

Don't get a suction gun. HLVP gravity fed gun is the way to go. I use the purple gun from Harbor freight. So much better then my $350 Sharp guns I used to use. They just collect dust now

I googled that and found some as low as $20.00 to as high as
$400.00! What should I be looking for exactly? And what is compressor lag?

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

I would say bare minimum is a compressor that puts out 6-7 cfm. You can use a lvlp gun with one of those. If your compressor is in the area of 11 or 12, you can look at hvlp guns
Smaller compressors than that can't be used for overall jobs, only one panel at a time

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

Buy a cheap one for practicing. No reason to buy a high dollar one if you only plan on using it once. In other words, compressor lag is when you are using an air tool and the compressor is lagging behind the use of the tool. The compressor constantly runs and never "catches up" with the tool. I've sprayed with a 2hp with a 20gal tank and it worked great. Keep your air pressure at the tip of the gun around 10 psi with an HVLP and you'll be fine.

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

heres what i saw on the tag of the compressor... 15 gal, displacement 8.6scfm, air delivery 4.9scfm @ 40psi 3.5scfm @ 90psi.

So I guess this is too small huh?
Looks like I will just have to rent a bigger compressor when I do it.

And while Im at it, I may as well rent an HVLP gravity feed gun with
a 1.3 or 1.4 tip??? Does this sound right?

Re: Is this a good spray gun?

Your dads may work ( compressor), depending on how much hp motor puts out. As long as it is keeping that 15 gallon tank full, you should be fine
