Donor Door Gap Help!!

I've been searching this topic for about an hour now and can't seem to get an answer to my exact situation. I just removed the factory door of my 84 Z28 and put on an 84 Berlinetta door. The junkyard took the door off by removing the A-pillar bolts and left the hinges welded to the donor door. I removed my factory door by doing the same. My friend and I placed the donor door on the car and it is a perfect fit from top to bottom. The gap between the rear quarter and door is almost non-existent, but the door closes with no issues, but is SNUG. I'm replacing the fender with a re-pop, but I have also replaced the passenger fender with a re-pop and that gap is perfect. I have about 1/4" gap between the driver's side door and fender now. I loosened all the hinge bolts and tried sliding the door forward, but she won't budge. I even resorted to banging the edge of the door with a rubber mallet and nothing. I can't seem to adjust this thing forward or backwards. Any ideas?

Re: Donor Door Gap Help!!

Easiest way to put this is if you're going to replace the other door, do it now. You're going to have to realign the entire front end (as in body panels) to get the fender/door gap closed to where you want it.

The long way to put it is:
1. You need to loosen the bolts on the fender to slide it towards the door.
2. You need to loosen the bolts on the hood at the hinges to realign the hood at the back of the fender.
3. You need to loosen the headlight to realign it with the front bumper cover and the new position of the hood. And now the one on the passenger's side if it's out of line.

:edit: You can't adjust the door via the hinges... the hinge straps are welded to the A-pillar.

Re: Donor Door Gap Help!!

Your door will move front to rear in the hinges at the a-pillar. One bolt hole in each hinge (IIRC) will need to be elongated. For some reason GM decided that the one hole should be perfectly round allowing no adjustment. The big problem is when the door sets in or out. That's when you have to be creative to get them to fit.

I had to grind the hinge holes quite a bit to get the new door to fit. my door was to low. fits beter than the original now.

Re: Donor Door Gap Help!!

I replaced my upper hinges with the replacement kit with grease fittings. My original doors were rusted out so i gt a pair off of an 89 firebird. I got the door gap really nice by the quarter but i didn't install the two stationary bolts. Can i leave those two out, or do i need to widen the holes and put them in? The door is nice and tight with no movement, and really don't want to take the door off again if i don't have to. Thanks in advance.

Re: Donor Door Gap Help!!

I'd put them back in. These are very heavy doors. But it's your car, it will probably be fine without them just put something in the holes so you don't have a water leak.

I'd put them back in to. you could mark the holes befor you do so that you know where to grind them.
