Re: replacement VIN tag

im sure you can ask around ar some local machine shops of they have the ability to stamp letters and numbers in flat sheet. youd really need a vin tag for measurements.

You will have to go through the local DMV, and State Police will have to install it.

Re: replacement VIN tag

to be 100% legal yes, but chances are if the vin number matches the other vin #s on the car noone is going to give you greif over a repacement one.

Re: replacement VIN tag

Get a punch, a number/letter stamp kit and some 1/16 aluminum and go to town... Then just rivet it into place...

Re: replacement VIN tag

The only issue you might have is finding the correct GM rivets. The replacement ones are not the same as the factory ones. You can have a plate made but some in the know (not many) will recognize the non-GM rivets.

Re: replacement VIN tag

Double check with some body shops first, If the only thing you need to do is "Make your own Vin" everyone would do it. You are manufacturing an identification plate, in the US posession of the correct rivets is a Felony unless you are Authorized to have them. Ignorance to the law will not work as a defense even in England, please check what you need to do. Hate to hear your in prison for Auto Theft just because you cut some corners.

Re: replacement VIN tag

england has different laws governing autos. it could be that all thats needed is the correct forums or something. youd have to reasearch the laws govering your country and its automobiles and go from there. call the local auto licensing place and see what they say.

Re: replacement VIN tag

I've had the same problem with my 70 Cad, here in California it was no problem just took it to the highway patrol office in Placerville (with an appointment) they had me leave the area & they checked for the hidden serial numbers that all cars have, then they install a replacement vin tag on the rear drivers door sill. Only the manufactures & the Gov have the locations of these numbers which varies with each Model of vehicle. Hope I helped.

It is, and years ago they were for sale on ebay all day and night. Seems that the guys selling them got busted and turned states evidence on those who bought them. Yep you got it many good unknowing folks had lots of questions to answer and itt was ugly in the end.

Re: replacement VIN tag

well im no further forward with this issue, my car needs a VIN tag simple as that, there are number punch kits on ebay and places that can stamp them for me, all i have to do is prove i am the legal owner of the car which i can as i have the paperwork, which has the VIN number on it.

i think im just going to have to make my own blank VIN tag and send it away to be reverse punched, but i dont know what to do about the rivets.

Does anyone know what size the letters are on the VIN plate, ive noticed you can get different sized ones so i want it to be the right size.

Re: replacement VIN tag

Have the AUTHORIZED folks do it start to finish. This may cost you some coin now but priced to a lawyers hourly rate it is real cheap. Think of it this way, you may not plan to sell and keep it untill the day you die. But if it is stolen and the authorities look at the vin tag upon finding the car things WILL GET UGLY. If it gets towed and the tow company looks at the vin and thigs appear funny you will have questions. Any problems that car goes to impound and even if cleared you still pay impound fees.

Re: replacement VIN tag

well being in England makes it very difficult to sort it out officially with it being an American car.

Ive been reading up and it is perfectly legal here to have new VIN's made by registered companies as long as you can prove you are the legal owner of the car, they have blank tags for lots of types of cars and they just stamp your info on them once they have seen copies of your documents to make sure its all legit.

However nobody here has a blank GM one but they do state if you provide your own blank and the paperwork they can do the reverse punching on it.

Re: replacement VIN tag

I have never replaced a Vin plate, but have done quite a few door stickers. Maybee this will point you in the right direction.
