PPG Shopline primer feedback

The local store gave me ppg shop line high build primer to prep my car for paint. I wanted to know if anyone has experience with this stuff and any concerns? I'm looking for something quality (doesn't have to be high dollar) and not extreme budget. Was planning to paint it in the garage.

Also looking for some suggestions the car is 89 IROC vert white. I was debating to repaint using original white for that year or go Alpine White.

Thoughts are appreciated.

Good stuff, is it lacquer or urethane? Make sure you use it in the right temperature range, the hotter your environment the better so it will flash quick.

PPG makes a quality product, just remember that if you change the color you need to do all the jambs and under hood. Even with a dif shade of white you may notice, if Fla you will have more issues in the garage with humidity. So as a fellow Floridian paint it by april so you can have the right temp range and low humidity.

Yes planning to do jam and eng compartment shooting for next month. I really want to do starphire pearl instead of plane white but I'm sure it will be a lot harder to shoot.

I use shopline every single day on non customer jobs. For the amount that you pay vs quality it is what it is. With that being said, its still a decent product that has good adhesion, color holdout and some corrosion resistance. Since shade value isnt a concern untill you are rdy to paint, i'd use it. also. keep in mind to get the right reducer for spraying. this it critical for good adhesion and helps preventing the primer from sinking .

If you do go with PPG just stay clear of their Omni line (IMO its crap) I switched from PPG to Dupont about 3 years or so years back. Remember your paint will only be as good as your prep work, take your time blocking the car make sure it is free of high and low spots. Figure out your flash time, spray a practice panel to test.

I'm going to take off the doors to repair hinges and the paint jambs anyways. I was thinking about spray everything apart and then putting it back together. Figure it will be easier that way.....any problems with that?

You can edge all your doors and such off to ensure you get good base coverage, but with a pearle I like to shoot it all at once for a consistent look. It can look spotty when yoy spray at differant times, its like Tri-coat paint I pray the entire car in one session.

Re: PPG Shopline primer feedback

Ok that's what I was worried about if I tried to spray it separate. Thanks

Also for what I saved on getting the shopline primer/paint figure I'd get a step up on the clear coat since that gets the most abuse.

Re: PPG Shopline primer feedback

Omni and Shopline are the exact same product with diffrent labels, depending on which distributor sold the product. The diffrence between PPG and Omni/Shopline is that PPGs banks and computer programs will support all of a colors variants. Omni/Shopline will not support any variants. This would only be an issue if trying to match an existing paint job and will have no effect on a complete job. Pearlescent is a tri-coat. Base coat (color), mica (pearl), clear. For shopline clear I like JH6700 with JH 6720 catlyst.

Re: PPG Shopline primer feedback

I Do not agree about the quality of PPG VS Omni, But that is my opinion, we shot PPG for years and tried Omni to save money but the results were not nearly as good. I now use Dupont, I like how their products lay down, again a personal prefrence. Omni is a lower line of PPG and can be mixed to match any existing factory color thru the color library provided. Typically, Tri-coat would be applied like this: primer/sealer, white "high-solid" underbase, white (mica) pearl, clear top coat; the results greatly rely on a uniform clear coat

Re: PPG Shopline primer feedback

I have found that when I try matching a newer car with shop line it will not match like global or DBC 2000 the problem with shopline is that they dont have all of the tint base that the DBC or global has
