Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

If you want a good base coat clear coat and you want the jambs and all done; assuming no or very minimal body work you should probably plan to spend $3500-4500. If you do more prep and disassembely yourself you could spend less. Of course, you could spend $10K+ if you want to go nuts on getting it perfect.
I know I gave you a wide range, but the $3500-4500 would get you a very very nice job if you do some minor prep yourself.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

It is very dependent on shop/labor rate, what brand and series of paint you use, if there are any underlying rust issues, and how quickly they want to work. Experience is also a large factor. paint alone may start at $500. I painted mine myself in DuPont Nason series and I paid $500 just for paint. factor in the tape, sandpaper, polish, blah blah blah. Check out the shop rates in Dekalb, sycamore, other smaller towns away from chicago land. Shop rate in central and southern illinois can be found as low as 35, and they did good paint jobs.

Also depends on how far the shop is going to go on prep work. Like removing the bumpers, hood, front fenders, ground effects, weather stripping, doors, remove the spoiler, hatch, windshield, ect.

If I was paying 3500 bones, they better do that

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

I paid around $6000 for my paint job. It was a corvette shop and a friend of the family. It was an amazing job, much better than factory. A couple weeks later it was windy, blew a garbage bag holder over and scratched the front fender near the side marker. I think that's the last time I cried.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

All depends... Different colors can mean different prices. I'm using a tricoat GM standard color and Im looking at $1,500 in just base and tintcoat. Thats Dupont Waterborn paint (damn you California) Another $250 in clear. Im going bare metal so $300 in etching primer, $300 in regular primer, any bondo (VERY minimal - im taking my time and doing the body right), tape, paper, sandpaper, paint remover, etc... Not counting weatherstripping, booth rental or what Im going to paint my friend to actually shoot it ($800)

So with all of that said Ill be into it for $3,500 with me doing a LOT of the work myself. Just for S's&Giggles I got a few estimates from local shops to do exactly what Im going to do and exactly what Im going to use... $8k-$12k.

Or you can go to Maaco and get their $299 special.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

I am just lookin for a nice paint job that is a little better than stock. In the factory color of flame red matalic. and i will remove most of the ground efects and all out side lights and marker lites and interior that needs to be removed.. i alredy have a complete weather strip kit that i will do myself after it is done.i just hate all the block sanding and the little bodywork that needs to be done.I hope i can get in at around 3500.00 what do you think?i wont be in a rush the shop can keep it all winter if they want. i do want the paint color sanded and buffed and clear coated.but i am goin to drive this car i dont want a 10000.00 show car job that if my kids bump the car i will want to go nutz.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

I think that is doable if you do all of the basic prep work yourself and dont expect a show quality job

Hey Rizz, you might be surprised at the results by taking it to Maaco for their base coat/clear coat. They shoot paint very well, but you should do all the body prep and part removal yourself.

I had another post on this subject you can look at: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...4-post423.html.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

Thats crazy expensive. Are you saying in California you cannot use a 2 stage polyurethane, that would cost at the most $500, but most colors $150-350?

Thats a pretty normal material cost for basecoat. Remember a tricoat white like that will take about 2.5x more basecoat than just plain white.

I don't know exactly how much solvent based paints cost but its going to be way more than $500 for a tricoat white. Pretty sure California has to spray waterborne, but waterborne is in most shops everywhere now anyways.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

There are some really good back yard guys that can do the work. I had mine done for $2800. It doesn't have to be a major shop doing the work. Around here we Have some guys who used to work at the big body shops and ventured on their own out of their garages. I am Sure it's the same everywhere else. Ask around and try to see some of the cars they painted.

Non-sense. Buy a Random orbital sander and a bunch of sandpaper and start removing the Clear coat and color coat. Then just buy a long board and a few different rolls of sandpaper. Buy Evercoat Rage filler if needed. Any Joe Schmo with $100-200 can prep a car for primer. Long as it's not a rusty body at least.

As everyone else stated, the more prep work you do the less it will cost you for the actually paint work. If they are essentially just laying the primer, base and clear then you could do it for a 2000-3000 bucks. If you learn how to do some cut and buffing, then you can fix any smaller imperfections in a less than stellar paint job and remove any orange peel as well.

Re: HOW MUCH SHOULD A GOOD PAINT JOB COST?

Local body shop did an estimate to repaint my black 91 RS Convertible. The car was 100% rust free, never been in an accident and mechanically 100%. Using Matrix paint the estimate was $4200. The quality of the shop's work was outstanding based on the cars & trucks I was painted there. He said that included fixing every dent the shop and I could find on the car. The owner mentioned if the hood had to be replaced due to dents that would be add about $500 to $1000 depending on what we proceeded. Owner said OEM parts are best fit and gave list of aftermarket companies to avoid. The shop with within a five minute drive of where I work. They provided written estimate.

Macco estimated $3500 with their best paint. I would have to mark every dent I wanted fixed. If a dent was missed that was on me. Black is tricky and I knew My car had several dings. I wasn't sure I could find all of them. This shop had fixed and painted 50+ 3rd gens and knew the cars very well. Hood should be replaced my choice. Fenders were fine just required minor work. The manager had owned several 3rd gens and had pictures of his car. He was very positive. This Macco I trusted. They provided written estimate. Several 60's muscles were being painted and quality of paint work was outstanding. The shop was almost two hours away.

Another local shop estimated $4000 to paint the same car but insisted both fenders required replacement and the hood. They insisted OER and similar aftermarket parts always fit better than OEM GM. I questioned the owner in detail and he stood by that line. They had painted a few 3rd gens but basically said the cars are typically a lost cause. I found I didn't trust this shop or the owner with my car.

Last local shop with big reputation, owners wife was clearly unhappy to see my camaro drive up to the shop. This surprised me because the owner had been very pro 3rd gen and enthusiastic about painting my RS. On my prior visit we had talked in detail when his shop fixed my girlfriend's truck. After seeing the RS his guesstimate was about $5000 to $6000. The wife ran the office and was at least unfriendly border line rude on this visit. The owner disappeared after the wife snapped at him and he sent of his guys to do the quote. He actually looked sad. The other guy said $15,000 to paint car plus materials and parts with at least a one year wait - without looking at car. I said that was beyond my budget and so he recommended the shop at the top of this list. this shops work was outstanding but it was clear they didn't want my business. Later, I learned the shop owner was a big 3rd gen Camaro fan had owned one and raced it for many years. Rumor said the wife nagged him into getting rid of the Camaro and getting serious about expanding the business. Some times other factors are at work when a shop gives a big $15,000 quote. This shop had done excellent work for me before but was the right place for restoration services. I suspect but do not know for sure, the wife was concerned her husband would get caught up in doing a project he actually like and she was afraid to would distract from other aspects of him running the business...or he'd get the but and want to go racing again

Black Camaro's do inspire that sort of thing.
