ignition actuator rod not working right?

Ok, so here's what's going on. I've been working on getting my car going, and I have been having a lot of trouble with the ignition actuator rod in my steering column. whenever I turn it to acc, and then try to start it, the key just flops around. I figured out that for some reason, the rod that hooks up inside the column will come off of where it's connected to if you put it in acc. for the most part it was just annoying, but now I've also been having trouble even when the car is just off and I try to start it. It just slips off of whatever it hooks to and won't work unless I reach under the column and wiggle the rod back into place on the column. any idea how to fix this, or even what might be causing it?? Is this even a clear enough explanation? I barely understand the steering column, so I'm probably not being as clear as I could be on all this. But any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated at this point.

Sounds like the switch that the rod atatches to is worn. not at the key ignition switch but the switch in the column itself.
