Seperating Tail Light Housing
I have a set of the grid style firebird tail lights and need to separate the front half from the back half and i dont know how. It looks somewhat straight forward but these things are just plastic so id rather not start prying things and break parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

They certainly do come apart, theres even a gasket like material between the back part and the lens. Im not trying to get them apart to clean them but thanks for the advice.

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
I've taken the grid style, 87-90 GTA, lights apart & they are actually pretty easy. I did it when I converted my clear Reverse light lenses to Red lenses & tied them into the Tail/Brake lights.
Pull the top 2 plastic pins out. Most likely they'll break & I've just used small sheetmetal screws to hold them back together. They bottoms are "hinged".....Tab into slot.....and to get them apart, I've always just pulled those pins then used a butter knife & a razor blade/X-acto knife. GENTLY pull apart & use the blade to cut the adhesive.
Just takes time, patience & warmth. I've never bothered to heat mine up any, but I wouldn't try it in the winter while it is still cold, unless you use a hair dryer/heat gun.

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
The grid itself is part of the outer housing so i dont know why it would look like that unless there was some serious delamination. With the housings apart it seems like it would be pretty easy to fix a little delam though.

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
The grid delamination is a common problem for those lights & nobody has ever fixed one, to my knowledge. Also why I have 2 spare sets!
If you know how to fix it, other than Super Glue os something like that.....Fill us in!

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
I forgot about those clips. Been years since I too mine apart to convert the clear to red & I forgot about those clips. I think I used wire cutters to get under the edges of the pins & a flat blade screwdriver for the clips.. Last edited by BlackenedBird; Mar 30, 2012 at 07:23 PM.

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
I forgot the clips at first as well. lol
To get the pins out i just used a screw driver and needle nose pliers. The pins were shot. lol
I was wondering why your reverse light covers were red. Is that legal? I thought they were clear for a reason.
I took these housings apart to install my LED tail lights, they look great.

But I wanna hear about your LEDs once they are in & a pic/video of how bright they are & how they light up the lenses. Like a "spot" of light or fully light the whole lens part. I wanna do LEDs for my Sequential Turn Signal lights.

Re: Seperating Tail Light Housing
Got it!! not bad pretty easy, those pins, they are just a cap that pushes into a wall anchor type pin.
Now that I got this apart, what do I do with it?
apparently the grid can't be fixed.
