Base Coat Clear Coat Removal

What should I use to remove the paint from a front bumper cover.I went to the auto zone and found a few paint removal products but you can't use it on plastic, fiberglass or vinyl.Anybody do this before.

I thought you bought a new bumper cover? I don't think I would use chemicals to strip it. If you are having the car painted, have them sand it down. You don't have to go to the plastic. Just strip the clear off, and get it down to the base color. That should be fine with a good primer.

I used this stuff called Bumper Stripper. It's supposed to be useful for all topcoats on all sorts of plastic and fiberglass parts. Well, it took my crap rattle-can stuff off nicely, but forget about anything below the (factory? IDK since the bumper covers were aftermarket) clearcoat underneath. Even the regular paint stripper didn't hardly touch that. Anyways, I think I got it from AutoColorLibrary.com...

I did order a reconditioned bumper!!I was waiting for about 15 days and it wasn't here yet.So I called them and they said they didn't have any in stock!!!You would think that they would have emailed me and told me that. They are a GD .com co.so I canceled it and got one from Hawks,it's coming tomorrow but it has paint on it and the body shop gave me a price that doesn't include stripping that down.

180grit, your hand, a comfy chair, and several cold beers. Be careful of those body lines. You can try 80grit (again, by hand) but that might be a bit aggressive.

Re: Base Coat Clear Coat Removal

I just sanded my husbands bumper down by hand using 80 grit and it took the clear coat off. I then went back over it with 120 to smooth it out before primer.

You can try this http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/spra-...remover-1.html corvette guys swear by it, but I've never tried it.

or option 2 you can use brake cleaner.

or option 3 as haps said, good ol' elbow grease with 180 grit. If you're a novice I'd stay away from 80 grit, not because it's not effective but simply because you run the risk of taking too much off too quick and ruining the bumper. But if you are comfortable with it, then by all means it will speed things up a bit.

I used 120 grit on my DA for the big areas and my hand for the corners and crevices. Mine had the fade stripe on it and I used 80 grit to chew through that. I finished it off with 320 grit to get it smooth. I wouldn't trust any chemical on the plastic.
