Shifter plate/letter alignment

When you pull the shifter back in my car, it does not indicate the correct gear nuber on the plate.. i.e. overdrive is "N", 3rd gear is "OD", etc. What is the problem and how can it be fixed?

Camaro or Firebird? I can't remember on the Camaro, but on the firebird the gear indicator plate with the markings is adjustable. Disassemble the plate and one or both sides should have some teeth that key into the trim panel, just lift it out and slide it the correct direction and drop it back down. Its self explanitory.
