Door and hatch question

I got a 92 camaro. And on the gatch glass it has a third brake light. Its god awful ugly. Ive seen older camaros in junkyards and they got nothing or a 3rd brake light in the spoiler. Was it all options from factory or did gm do the glass mounted brake light in the later models? The door question is does the door hinges come off the doors on 3rd gens? I noticed a rust line that looks like its between the hinge and the door. I pulled the hinges off my 4th gens and its all seperate and I sanded the rust of the car and hinges. Doors are fiberglass. I want to do this to third gen but not sure if hinges come off door I dont see ant bolts

Re: Door and hatch question

The high brake light was made mandatory in 86-87 (depending on your state). Earlier cars didn't have it. The light was moved around based on year and options (no spoiler, etc). Most of the later cars had it under the top of the hatch glass. Earlier ones had it on the outside in the same spot. Others had it in/under the spoiler, if equipped.

The hinges are welded to the door shells on 3rd gens. Because they're steel.

Re: Door and hatch question

As I understand it, the 3rd brake light (or CHMSL/Center High Mounted Stop Light) was a federal mandate on all passenger cars (but not light duty trucks or vans) sold in the U.S., starting with the 1986 model year.

As they pertain to F-Bodies:

1986: one year only style/easiest way to spot an '86. They were mounted on the OUTSIDE of the top of the rear hatch glass.

1987-90: integrated into the rear spoiler or bumper, depending on the model.

1991-92: mounted on the inside of the top of the rear hatch glass.

Re: Door and hatch question

I think being inside the glass is less intrusive to the exterior looks than either before it

Re: Door and hatch question

I saw some aftermarket door hinges for 3rd gens and im not completely sure if this is right but I tjink u cut the old ones off the door and the new ones bolt on there? Anyone have these or know anything about them? Seems like a better idea to replace hinges instead of the whole door.

Re: Door and hatch question

Well, depending on where the OP is, if he's down south and out of the rust belt, it would probably be cheaper to get 2 door shells (or whichever one has the bad hinge) than to replace even one whole door hinge ($100 each half when I last looked 2 years ago). I paid $50 each for 3 doors...

And the problem with the 3rd brake light under the hatch glass is that usually they don't work by now due to the heat of the light bulb melting the interior plastic parts holding it in place. Or a problem with the wire that gets flexed each and every time you open the hatch.

Re: Door and hatch question

First passenger's door came from the J/Y after a couple incidents (a break in among them) for $50, only glass, door handle bracket, and shell (with rust, but not much at the time). The following pair I picked up last year off a guy who was parting an 84, with a passenger's front fender, for $95, fully trimmed with power windows (but not locks) and mirrors. There was some damage around the passenger's side lock and a bit of rust, but nothing going through the outer skin. Guess I got lucky? I know some of the yards around here that have inventory on car-part.com advertise doors in excess of $200...

Re: Door and hatch question

I dont have any rust on doors but if u look at the hinge it looks like theresvrust between the door and hindge. I know there is.. Its a 3rd gen.. Ive taken alot of doors off 4th gens and there was always some rust between the car and hinge but nothing that a little sanding could take care of.. Im just thinkin I cant take the hinge off my third gen and sand the rust so eventually its gonna get bad.
