Fiberglass Hood Questions

how weak are they? are they strong enough to sit on? what would happen if a car in front you threw up a little rock, how much damage would it do?

Yikes!! You want to sit on your hood????
The hood would collapse/cave-in/break/be destroyed if you sit on it. I wouldn't even sit on the steel one that came with the car.

I don't know about a small rock, it would probably just chip or scrach(spelling) the paint. You could do some damage with a very dense rock, but that wouldn't be kicked up by the car in front of you.

Later,
Jesse

Hand layed fiberglass is extremely strong. Think about a boats hull, same stuff. Depending on manufacturer, yes you could sit or stand on it. It will flex, not dent or cave-in like a metal hood. Will it chip? Just like the paint on your stock hood.

my 82z28 has the fibreglass hood. I am starting to get a crack in it. As you know the hood has two areas that are depressed. This is were you would put the false air scoops. The dividing ridge between the two depressed areas is were the crack has started. It is also growing towards the wind screen. Going down the highway at 120 you can see the hood flexing.

Oh that is 120 kph

yup , I Just got the ASCD ram air hood for my TA and I would be confident enough to sit on that hood , it has all sorts of bracing etc... and is definitely thicker than my stock TA hood.

With both of my corvette hoods i would be very confident to sit on the hood. i have had girls sit on the original hood (has bracing) and the L-88 hood also seems very strong. im not sure about camaro/firebird hoods because they anre a bit shallower, and more level, but i think they would be pleanty strong. oh and i recieved my L-88 hood from ASCD

I, personally, wouldn't sit on my hood either, but they are pretty strong. It depends on what type of hood you get, the "race" hoods are generally lightweight 'glass as opposed to the "street" versions. The 'glass hood is more resilient to everyday "wear and tear", such as dents and "knuckleheads" leaning on your ride.As far as rocks go ,the paint will still chip....but the 'glass won't dent like the steel would.

Hope this helped........Hammer
