painters, your help is required!

Well, as I widdle away at the body work, soon it will be time for paint. Colors and ideas become stressful. Almost any color looks great. I don't want to replicate or copy another camaro. After awhile I got my plan. I want to do a two tone, kinda, with gloss and matte finishes. So here's my questions.

If I spray a flat color, and a similar gloss color, then a gloss clear, will the flat still be flat or satin?

I would like to have the body mostly a high gloss with certain "accents" a bit duller.

Also, I need an idea for a manufacturer. Ppg? Omni? I hear names a lot but never really why its better.

If you clear over matte it will be clear. There are flattening agents you use in clear to apply for a matte finish.

Just make sure you go with a high quality clear. SPI IMHO makes the best stuff in the world. Lots of good clears out there though like transtar Euro Kwik, Flo-klear, Kustom shop 2k super flow, Glasurit HS, PPG's 2002 polyurethane clear

It all depends on your budget. You dont see show cars being sprayed with omni, kirker, shopline, nason, 5 star...But that doesnt mean they are not good, just not AS good as above and require more finessing.

I have sprayed show quality finishes with kirker, and nason clears but they required hours and hours cutting and buffing to get them to where I wanted them to be.

If the money is there go with SPI and a poly at that. If not go with a urethane and kirker is my favorite out of the more budget friendly brands.

the color itself makes no difference as black magic stated. You use the same base for a flat black as a gloss black and so on... it all depends on the clear you use. you unfortunately cannot do high gloss/low gloss at the same time, you would need to do them at separate times. I myself prefer DuPont 74700 or 74700, looks great and is decently affordable, or 72200. also you cannot buff dirt out of flat clears so if you are looking for a show stopping finish clear the whole paint job then wet sand the whole thing, buff the high gloss areas back to shine, and lay your mask line for the flat clear and clear over... this way all of the orange peel from the sealer, base coat, and first round of clear are removed and you will have better luck with flat clear being clean that way.

You can have a great matte finish at 10-20ft when you wet sand it out. When you come up closer you will see sand paper strokes ect. Not a good application for a quality finish or for show.

You want to shoot the whole car in gloss, wait appropriate time then mask off. Apply flattening agent to the clear you have and spray the areas you want flat. Tape off the matte/flat areas before you cut n buff the gloss.

So if I want a flat black stripe I can use an "agent" to flatten the gloss clear?

Thats right SPI #950. Is the "agent" you want. 35%-40% pure flat and 20% satin
