how to find/remove c-clip on shifter

I have a 90 Formula Auto. I was wondering how to remove the shifter ****.

look to the front of the shifter **** and it will be in the threads if it is leather. and if not you will be able to see it. use needlenose pliers to pull it out..and then just pull off the shifter ****.. its that easy.
