I seem to recall that in an 89 GTA the grilles were non-covered, with horizontal cutouts running the whole width. I got a replacement dash for my bird from an 87 Firebird, and they had the same grilles.

 

In 86 (this is the only year I'm 100% sure of), the base stereo came with the plastic grill covers. If you got the premium stereo with the 5 band eq, it came with the exact same cheap POS speakers, but the grills were steel mesh with a cloth cover to let more sound through. Cheezy hua?

I have an '86 bird that came w/ them originally and swapped out for the regulars a while ago. after seeing this post i dug the old ones out and tried to take the cloth off. I had the exact same results as the guy above... its near imposible to get the cloth off w/o some of the mesh coming w/ it. I dunno, just figured i'd add my two cents in.

If you want those grilles you can purchase them new from either the Classic Industries Camaro or the Classic Industries Firebird divisions. Year One's NextGen division may also have them but Classic Industries does for sure.

I realize this is an old post but I'm wondering if anyone ever solved this problem of finding cloth speaker grilles. Actually I never even knew that they were covered in cloth. Mine were just a perfect wire mesh, until I dropped one the other day and broke it like a moron.

So, is there anywhere to get these things? I really don't even care if they have the cloth, if anyone has a set with the wire mesh in good shape that they might want to sell me that would be cool too.
