Re: 4th gen hatch opener

I'm sure you could get the 4th gen one to work with enough fabrication, but I'm also sure it would be a lot easier to adapt a non-electric pulldown one from an earlier or lower-optioned third gen. Plus the 4th gen ones suck -- the latches aren't made very strong, and the springs are so weak that I usually have to hit the release button 3-4 times to actually get it to come up far enough to actually release when it's below 80 degrees outside.

I'm pretty sure the hatch motor was not available at first...maybe look at some 82-84's next time you're at the jy?

Re: 4th gen hatch opener

My suggestion is to just fix it if you can. The factory didn't switch to the pull downs because they wanted everybody to have something cool that wasn't optional. They did it because they got tired of paying for exploded back windows in cold climates. Not to mention that when the glass falls out and the hatch weighs about 200 pounds less, it springs open hard enough to break your jaw. Yeah, I'm old. You'll also have to do some welding to use the early style latch.
