Hawks RA I Hood
Has anybody made one of these functional? If so, how much work was it? Will it work with the airbox for the RA II hood? These look 100000000000X times better than a RA II on our cars but I 'd like to get a little cold air to the intake. And, don't say "RA I and a CAI" as my heater hose re-route precludes that and I don't think they're of much value, either. Also, I've "searched" to no avail.
Pics would be great!

I don't think there is enough room under the RAI hood to fit the RAII airbox(when it is bolted normally.)
One thing you could do though is rather than it sitting on top of the radiator support...move it back towards the motor more. That might allow it to fit under the hood.
Anyway, you must be looking at too many 82-90 cars with the RAII hoods. They look much better on 91-92 cars.

Charcoal, You have a nice looking car. But I would have to say that the RA I hood looks much better on the '91-92 birds. The lines of the RA I flows with the car.

yes you can make it functional, theres another 91 Vert around somewhere that modified an Ls1 lid with fiberglass and some massaging. looked factory and functioned, however, he had an LSx swap in that car, dimensions would be different in a Gen II car but im sure the idea is the same.

Twas me... I started with another company's RAII box, but concept is the same. The RAII box is too far forward. I molded together a spare plastic radiator cover, the cut up RAII box, and a 4th gen lid (just to fit the LS1 MAF and have more of a smooth transition).
Using the extra radiator cover allow the box to sit directly on top of the existing one and bolt up using the two middle bolts. I redid when I added the supercharger and it's now pretty much 90% fiberglass with a 4" outlet for the 102mm TB, but I haven't posted pictures of that yet.

Re: Hawks RA I Hood
Thank you very much, sir! 2 more ?'s:
That's about 1" rearward?
Is there anymore foam "sealing" necessary other than what's shown?
An exterior pic would be great.
Thank you again!

Re: Hawks RA I Hood
If talking about the front edge of the radiator cover, it's more about 2" or so. If you mean, 1" farther back then the RAII box I started with, then yes. The lid goes over the base, plus the picture is a little deceiving. Easiest thing to see is that the 'box' starts right where the radiator cover goes flat.
I actually removed the foam after a little bit to try and allow the hood to close a little closer to the front bumper. Wound up taking about 5 years and redoing the box for the SC to determine what was causing the line up issue (hood spring), but I didn't notice any adverse effects.
Honestly it's SO close to the hood that I'm not even sure if the foam is needed. The tubing on the SC made the box raise up just a little bit and the hood was really hard to close.
Eventually (probably another 4 years), I'll throw some playdoh around the lid and get an actually mold of where the hood lays.
Here's one from last week at CTC:

Here's one before I removed the hood spring:

Here's a few 'unpublished' pics from when I remade the air box. Give's you an idea about how to make something like it.
