Changing to 16" IROC wheels

I currently have 235/60R14 wheels and tires. I would like to switch to the 16" stock IROC wheels and tires. I have the Spt Cpe model, not the Z28. What do I need to know to do the swap? Do I need wheel spacers? I assume I will need a new speedometer driven gear. How can I tell how many teeth I need on the new gear? If anyone has done this swap or knows what it takes to do the swap I would appreciate it. Thanks

As far as swapping between 14, 15 & 16" wheels that are on a camaro/bird,,, they are all (generally) the same height,,, 245/50/16 is the tire size for the 16" wheel,,, technically,, if you had the original wheels on your car & swapped to this size,, no speed adjustments shoould have to be done

I have the 16" IROC wheels on my Sport Coupe (originally had 15"), and they are a direct fit. You can use the stock rear wheel spacers if you like, I used to, but they got lost somewhere along the way and I've been running without them for a quite a few years now.

One thing to be aware of though is that with the wider wheels on your car you'll feel the ruts a lot more than now if your suspension, especially the front, isn't up to par. If you find you need to redo the suspension, I would recommend polygraphite bushings.

Oh yeah, my speedometer/odometer is still dead on, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

I just read somewhere that the IROC steering gearbox for the 16" wheels had a different degree of turn than the standard 15" wheel model. It supposedly dosen't turn as far, and when I put the 16s on my RS it seemed like they did turn a touch too far. Anybody know for sure?

The IROC does indeed have a different steering box. The stock sport coupe steering box would cause the tires to rub at full lock on the IROC. It may not rub on the sport coupe because the SC sits higher than the IROC which provides a little extra clearance.

Yes, mine rubbed at full lock, that is until I added a steering box out of an IROC. Better steering ratio too.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am going to get some IROC wheels. I just need to either find some used ones in good shape or buy new. Anyone know where I can get some new ones for under $700. $700 is the cheapest I have found yet.
