Prepping crappy paint on nose for new paint?

hey all,

I've got an '83 Z28 that's got a shoddy repaint on it that's peeling on the plastic front bumper cover. I obviously need to shed that paint before painting again. Should I sand it or what? I immagine chemical strippers would kill the urethane (or whatever the bumper cover is made of) and I don't want to go too far with the sanding...any suggestions?

thanks
Clem

I never painted the nose of my 87, but i did paint the bumper. i tried chemical stripping and the strongest stripper that you could buy would not take the paint off for some reason. I used aircarft stripper and it bubble the bumper a little bit in the spot that i tried it on (eventually went down). so what i did was sand it off with a DA sander (don't stay i one spt to long or you will ruin the nose) and them the cracks and corners that i couldn't get to i wet sanded.
Hope this helps
Tom
P.S. This was my first and only time painting a car so someone might have a faster way. (i am only 18 and inexperienced)

thats what i did to my 88 irocs rear bumper. i had a big round crack from where it looked like someones exaust tip went through. i DA sanded it down to the plastic. reinfored and filled the crack. then i primered it. then i wet sanded the whole bumper and sprayed some surfacer on it. then we painted it. i did this for my senior project at school. the front bumper should be the same, i think i'm gonna try my front bumper here soon. hope this helps

Sometimes if you happen to accidentally pull up too far at a parking bump and bend the nose it'll damage the nose, possibly crack it. If thats the case, no matter what you do, the paint will never be right. Here's a suggestion. gmdirect.com has brand new bumper covers, part number 16503496 for $157.94 Thats the route I'm going. Hope that helps.

thanks for the responses.

My bumper cover is in sound condition. I just need to remove the bad layer of paint that's chipping and peeling at the edges. I guess a DA sander? on the flat spots and sand the rest by hand? anyway I go about it, I guess it's going to be a long process

go to your local auto parts store, and get urethane parts remover , it is a paint stripper for urethane, and it works great. wont damage the urethane.

What exactly is a new bumper cover? Does it fit over the existing bumper shell or is it a completely new outer shell that replaces the existing one? I'm a bit confused about this. I also need to fix up my bumper and it would be great if I could get a new outer shell for the whole thing for $75. One more thing - does it also include the front GFX?
