Totaled

Well guys, I should be back at the site again, I totaled my 1997 Firebird on Friday, it hit gravel and slid into a meridian it was still driveable till a SUV came down the hill and struck my car again and broke the suspension, engine quit running, airbag deployed, and front end was all smacked up. The car is a total loss, and ICBC will most likely try and screw me over. Said part is, I only got to drive it for a week and a half and it only had 122,000 miles on the car.

Glad you are ok, but I'll never cry when a 4th gen bites the dust, welcome back to third gen!

I am pretty sure the frame is twisted, and the motor won't run anymore, when I was hit the motor leaked all its fluids on the ground. ICBC is trying to say I am at fault at the moment, so if it does turn out that way, I basically won't be getting the value of my car and won't be able to buy the 91 T/A I have my eyes on.. I do know they are paying for my injuries though, its allot of soft tissue damage the doctor said. And on top of that, my lungs are filled with dust from the airbag deploying.

I'm not specifically speaking about the OP's situation, but anything is repairable if you have the time and money.

Even without frame damage, his car is going to get totaled simply because the airbag deployed. It is a 15 year old car after all.

Re: Totaled

I agree about anything being repairable, my dad and my brother are finishing restoring a 56 Crown Vic and they've done a ton to it to get it up and running. It all depends on how much you want to invest in fixing it vs. starting over.

If you were stopped and the SUV ran into you, the SUV's insurance should be footing part of the bill. My previous car got ran into after I bumped the car in front of me and he got dinged for hitting a stopped car.

I rebuilt a totaled (major frame damage) fourth gen a couple years ago. In the end it wasn't worth it. cut, weld, hours on the frame machine, new body panels, paint, blah. Never again.

Re: Totaled

I will tell you the reason why I am not repairing it, before the accident, the head gasket went, it was overheating, I didn't have the money for it, and the power steering pump had went too, so I was driving around with manual steering, the windows were buggered up they would work only when they want to, the anti theft was messed in the car and would engage for no reason, and the car had electrical issues. I was going to fix all this but now there is no point, because if you look at the costs for everything on this car, you might aswell go ahead and buy a new one.. I could repair it.. But I would rather just go buy my friends 1991 Trans Am for $3500, 305 TPI 5 SPD new clutch, new brakes, new rotors, new calipers, new struts, new headlight actuator, new power window motor, no rips in interior, body is immaculate, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, power hatch.

Re: Totaled

Glad you're ok, but don't drive the next one like a jackass.

"Hit gravel" tells me you lost control and then hit the gravel and it went downhill from there. Too many F-body owners running these cars into the ground driving 'em hard like they have complete ADD.

Gravel was one of the factors, I went through a yield sign into the highway travelling 40km a suv was coming down the hill, I went in its lane, not realizing its lane position, I went to speed up, I hit the gas started spinning the wheels, panicked went to shift to 4th gear from third, shifted to 2nd, lost control slid into the median then was struck by the SUV. I though she was in a different lane, but actually was in mine.

Yup sounds about right, if its going to cost you 4,000 in repair or more, might aswell buy another one, especially if you don't have an attachment with it.

theres a senser in the back of most fi cars that kills the fuel pump in the event of a wreck.you may need to reset it to get the engine to run.

I don't know that his '97 would have that. I've seen it on some late model (02+) fords, imports, but never seen it on a fbody.
