86 seatbelts w/ an 82 headliner

I recently put in 86 seatbelts in my 82 t/a. They are the kind that have two retracting parts, one in the roof and one on the floor by the door. the seatbelts i took out were 1 retracting part, that just bolted in where the 86 retracter is now. The problem is, where the 82 belts fit fine through the hole in the headliner, the 86 belts are all one piece and the retracter will not fit through the headliner. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Is there a way to take the belt out of the retracter? could anyone with these 86 style belts describe how they fit through a t-top headliner?
Thanks

The two piece seat belts have a slit in the headliner for the belt to slip through. There is a plastic piece that snaps to the top belt section that covers the slit.
