Re: battery box rust repair

a plastic tray will help alot. what causes it to start rusting is if the battery leaks some of the battery acid onto the tray it loses the rust proofing it had. were the acid touched it it happened to me after i replaced the tray

Re: battery box rust repair

I knew I should have cut the battery trays out of the last car I had as the trays whaere in awsome shape. Id go with the metal personally as the battery is alot of wieght and the fact the car moves and shakes I think it will take more abuse then plastic

Re: battery box rust repair

New metal + POR 15/similar product + truck bedliner (spray-on Bed Armor may work). That thing should never rust again. There is also a product called Battery Mat that supposedly absorbs the acid and converts it into something safer.

Look for Dodge and the like... They use full plastic trays. Doesn't have to be just GM. I know that if you get something from a Dodge, you'll probably end up cutting it somehow, however, since most of the batteries in those are bigger. Make a cardboard template of the bottom of the battery and take it with you to find out what may or may not fit.

Re: battery box rust repair

thats a good point as if your tray is rotten you can do the 4th gen coolant tank mod and clean up some of your engine bay at the same time. You can see mine in this pic before I trimed it up to fit perfect

Yes i see how the coolant overflow tank sits off to the side i like that a lot im guessing the battery sits right on top of it does it have to be a 5.7 4th gen 93-97 or a ls-1 98-02 or do all 93-02 have the coolant overflow tanks like that.

An also what kind of dodge like trucks or do all dodge models have plastic trays i dont mind if i have to cut it since im making my own an had a feeling i would have to cut one to make it fit

Re: battery box rust repair

I used a battery box made for a boat, works well for stopping acid rust.

Ok so noticed the 4th gen coolant overflow tank sits on the right side but my battery sits on the left. on the other side is the mounting bracket for the air filter housing does the 4th gen tank bolt up on the left ????

Re: battery box rust repair

Any 4th gen will have it regaurdless of the year. I assume you can use it on either side it just means either the battery hold down is towards the front or rear of the car. Ive seen it in peoples firbirds / trans ams but I cant recall on switch side its on
