How hard to replace Fenders???
Hey people,
Sorry for the newbie question but seriously, how hard is it to replace the fenders on an 86 TA. How many bolts are there and how would I get to them???
The reason I am asking is becasue I just got hit by some b&^ch on my PS fender today, and its totalled. I want a replacement but don't know how hard it will be to put it on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW Does anybody have a PS fender for an 86 TA for sale in the 60-100$ range (they are 120 new)

Pop the hood and remove al the ones lining the fender along the frame rail.
Remove the 2 bolts behind the tire
Take out inner fender (plactic piece around the tire)
Remove the gfx piece from the front of the fender
Unbolt the front fender brace
Unbolt the fender from the nose
As chiltons manuals love to say,, installation is reverse of removal
Hardest part to undo/see/access
You can get the fender off by having someone lift the hood up slightly to slide the fender off

Also note: If your t/a is like mine(looks like the GTA) You may have to cut a hole for the vent behind the wheel. The reason I stated this is cause I just got mine back last week from where I got hit in the same place. The total price was $1800.00 and they couldn't find a fender with the vent cut-out already and charged an extra $20.00 an hour to cut it out. Just food for thought....

Didn't they try GM for a fender?? Mine was $150.00 from gm with the heat extractor cut out. Not too mention Classic Industries and Year one have them as well.
Man I hope they at least gave you a kiss after that screwing. Ouch!

Ok, the way it looks right now is I can get my hands on a GTA fender (no vents).
My question is are teh TA 86 and GTA 88 fenders the same shape (minus the vent).
Cause if they are, then it would be pretty easy to cut a hole for the vent in the GTA fender and stick it in. Am I right?

O.K. Let me explain Dec 13th I was at the Grocery Store. I was inside shopping when a man walks in and said "does anyone own a red Trans Am?" I said "I do" and He said "I just
backed over it!" I went out and looked at my car and the only damage was the fender was pushed in. It didn't damage the Hood or Front Cap. Cops come and yadda yadda. I get 3 estimated all for around $1800.00 for the guys insurance co to repair. I had just gotten my car repaint about 2 years ago and my car is excellent condition. The Insurance lady thought I was just trying to get over on her because my car is 14years old. But the Auto Body Shops I took it to was all telling me she don't understand that the car is great condition. And they wanted to do a good job. Anyway I didn't have to pay for it and I love my car and wanted it done right. The Fender was original GM fender(part#10081965 for $266.44) They removed my passenger side door and took all the stuff off like mirror, cylinder, handle and etc. They removed the hood and took all the stuff off it. And removed the Front Cap and Repainted the Hood, Front Cap, and Door inorder to keep the color matching the new fender with the rest of the car. The problem that happened with the fender was it didn't have the vent in the side behind the wheel and it had to be cut-out which cost more in labor that the insurance had to pay. The total replacement parts was $421.60,Paint and Materials was $322.67, Labor was $975.80 Which brought a total of $1720.07. Yea I thought that was alot but I didn't give a **** cause I wasn't paying for it and I wanted it done right! Here's My Ride! https://www.thirdgen.org/rides/index...ew&rideid=1324

The hole is not just cutout, There is a lip stamped around the cutout, just like the hood vents, to hold the plastic 'extractor' and give it a place to attach to.
To cut a hole out you would have to tack weld some sort of stop to hold the vent in place & flush with the face of the fender

Ok so what I would need is some kind of blowtorch to cut the fender, then attack a border on the inside of the fender. Doesn't sound too hard.
Has anybody actually done this, or better yet does anybody have an 85-90 TA PS fender they could part with?
Thanks for the help
BTW Karps, I never ordered anyhting from GM directly. Where would I go to get this fender for 150? I would really appreciate an adress.

Do not use a blow torch on these poor thin gauge fenders,, it will warp them. You can use a drill to start the hole & a jig/saber saw to cut the metal out w/a fine tooth blade but it's alot more work than paying the extra $20-$40 for the right fender new. The lip I was talking about looks similar to this
It's possiable to do semi-easily do by cutting out & fabbing up the mounts if you know what you are doing.
The part numbers are
1008 1965 for the right fender
1008 1966 for the left
Seach www.gmpartsdirect.com for the price (leaving out the space in the numbers for searching)
It will give you dealer price, wholesale price, & thier price. The wholesale price is what you can snag the part for from the dealer if you argue just right (usually claiming that's what the insurance estimate said it cost to replace)
That should help you some(I hope)

That is the correct fender for a T/A right out of the collision book,, did you try both #'s? (they will cost the same Rh or Lh)
when you search type the number just like this 10081966
If you put the space the #, the seach will not find it

Deadbird,
I tried both numbers, the second one works (the 1st one doesn't).
Now my problem is that I don't know if thats the DS or PS fender. You say 10081965 is the right fender, do you mean right is PSide or DSide?
Also do these fenders come with the TA ground FX or do I have to buy those seperately?
Sorry for all the stupid questions, but that site is condusing and gives a 2 word descripition fro the part number.

No stupid questions so far,,, I always wondered staqrting out myself,,, who's left are they talking about ? the guy standing in front looking back or vice-versa lol
Left and right are referred to as from the vantage point of sitting in the drivers seat.
I'll have to agree about gmpartsdirect,, it's not a very well setup site for selling parts, that's why I only use it to get prices so I know how bad a dealer is trying to bend me over.
Unfortunatly, as jobryan said,, everything else is extra.
Another idea is go check one of your local paint supply places,, usually they order repo. parts for body shops that are great (affordable) replacements (sometimes with a fit gaurentee)

Thanks for the help deadbird,
1 last question ... I promise: What paint shops are you talking about, and if its a small business what are the chances they'll have the exact 85-90 TA PS fender I need?
I'm thinking I'll take off the fender tonight, try to hammer out the dent and Bondo up the damage, it worked pretty well with my DS fender, but the dent was smaller on that one.

Asking questions is the whole point of this board
,,, how do you learn if you don't ask ?
As far as paint suppliers goes,,, I was referring to the 'average joe' types (mainly the smaller ones) because they , at least around where I live, are the most willing to help and answer questions because they don't leech their profits from the main body shops in town.
The chances of any paint supply house stocking the part you awant is pretty vague, but, most of the time they can get it within 2-3 days since they deal with one certain distributor (most of the time). The good thing about it is, unlike ordering a oversized part, they don't charge you shipping (again referring to around where I live) which is the biggest advantage.
Hammering out your damage & trying to bondo it is a good learning exp,, plus you have the advantage of,,, can it get worse ? You always know you can get a new one down the road. As long as you know what you are doing with the hammer & bondo, sometimes you can save some trouble
That's my buds 72 truck,, everything rear of the middle of the wheel arch is bondo,,, I spent a long time sanding to get all the lines right. Patience & a good sence of being able to 'see' with your hands is the biggest key to getting body filler looking good.

Thanks deadbird,
I'll go try to find these paint shops tomorrow, but in the meantime I got the fender off now, and will begin hammering.
As for Bondo, I got lots of experience with that. My car had a LOT of dents and dings and rust spots, actually 50% of my rear hatch metal is Bondo due to rust under old aero-wing. Now they are all fixed and the last things before I take it to get painted is the fender.
Anyways Thanks for the all the help again, I'll post my results here or E-mail you.
BTW The picture of the truck doesn't laod for me for some reason.
