hey guys just had the grand idea of building my own center console. from the radio mount to the "glove box". i figgure ill use some wood, some fiberglass and what ever padding i may need. as of now its just a "good idea" i havent actually planned anything out. i figgure id talk with the pros 1st, and get some ideas from everybody. i know i want cup holders. thats a must. then i was thinking of a change holder and the "glove box" . also i wanted to put some cupholders in back like the 4th gen ones have. so anyone have any ideas? anyone whos done it before have any advice? anyone wana pay me alot of money to make them one when my kick a.s.s. one is done?

me either, i was thinking i could paint it to match the color of the car or do black vinal over the fiberglass? opinions? i have a maroon car thats horribly oxidized, but end of summer-next winter its gettin new paint. along with GFX and hood, possibly a 4th gen wing. i saw the original color when i installed my amp and EQ, and i almost nut my self, it was BEAUTIFUL. damn 80s!! Why didnt they do clear coats!?!? but thats a diffrent board

Okay I would NEVER eat/drink/smoke in my car so that cupholder design is USELESS to me. You people are crazy if you need cupholders. Jeez, you're a disgrace to F-Body

A disgrace? I drink in my car, because I know I can be careful. If you think you are incapable of being careful, don't drink in your car. If you meant that jokingly, I apologize for sounding rude, but its just been a looong day.

and i bet your car is nicer than mine. with anti-freeze, coffee from previos owner, and a few rips in the rear seats, i really dont care if i drop crap in the interior. i will once it has a 98 and up leather interior and a brand new carpet kit. and on the subject of smoking, i still dont let people do that just cuz i cant stand it.

My interior is perfect except for a broken air vent thingy that you cant see unless you're looking for it.

Mine is perfect except one air vent thing is broken, and I have a small rip in the drivers side corner of the dash pad. I still drink in it. I never let anyone smoke in it though, cause no matter how careful you are, the car will pick up the smell.

the K1 kit is really expensive. $780 for the dash and the console. lots of people think its crazy to pay that much, but to me it makes the car look entirely different inside so its worth it to me. you can look @ the K1 site for more details, its www.k1-styling.sk
the kit comes from the Slovak Republic (yeah for real .. who woulda thought!!) all the way over in europe. they do have an american reseller though, and thats where im going to be ordering all my stuff from (i plan to order the interior kit in about a month, and the entire bodykit in about 10 months).
the kit is really cool ... you remove your stock dash and center console, but you leave the guage cluster and steering column. then you bolt up the kit (it uses factory bolts). im gonna take it a little farther though, I plan to fab a custom guage cluster mount and use autometer guages (silver bezel, white face) just like someone else here did. The kit also comes with new stuff for the doors (new looking buttons and stuff and different armrests). I plan to completely re-tweed the interior (roof and doors) and make my own flame designs all over the place (learned that one from all the minitruckers!! hehe). gonna finish it off with the new pedals, new steering wheel, and matching shiftknob, and a nice set of 5 point seats.

that is a momo steering wheel. im not sure of the model number or name though. isn't it nice?? they come in leather too!! woohoo!! hahaha. i gonna get mines in black leather and accent the inside of the wheel with dark green (yeah i dunno what it is but i got this thing with black and dark green hehe). i emailed them a few weeks ago about the kit asking some more questions, still waiting on answers though. i was asking if there were still spots for the stock dash speakers, if the console is configureable for auto and manual (like when i do the 6 spd swap will it work?), what kinda configurations the stero part above the shifter comes in (i know for damn sure i not gonna be running with a tv in my car!! bleah!!) and more misc questions about the doors ... basically wondering if i can still install a rollcage that would fit the stock dash (like 8 pt or 10 pt or something). i'll get back to you guys when I get more info.

I'm sorry, but that is , without a doubt, the most horrific interior I have ever seen.
As far as the subject of eating or drinking in your car; I do it all the time. I spend a lot of time in my car in the summer, and something cold to drink is a must while crusing with friends.

i made a custom console for my jvc kameleon a long time ago, balsa wood, and then fiberglassed over it, sanded it, mounted my ac controls below the radio, cut off the fanswitch and mounted it in the middle. put my window switches below the radio between the ac controls, on the side of the centered fan switch. the kameleon was flush mounted, and i painted it gloss black so you couldnt tell the radio from the surface.
worked great till the balsa broke when the ac cable wouldnt stretch to hot and i pushed to hard, took it out, went back to original.
was sweet while it lasted, someday ill get out the creative torch and do some metal work instead of fiberglass.

I am thinking of making a console out of aluminum and having it anodized....

Here's one of an entire custom dash & console
Pic is from www.caraudioresources.net & quality isn't the greatist but, well, here,,
Aside from the color choice, I don't think it's all that bad.

I don't like that interior kit too much.. It looks kinda cheap like it was made by fisher price or something.. As for the body kit.. It looks like COMPLETE JAP CRAP. IMO I would just buy a nice cowl hood and a 91-92 Z28 high rise spoiler spend a bunch of money on a REALLY REALLY nice quality paint job with new IROC + Z28 emblems. Then the left over money on some killer TT2 17" rims. IMO that would be the best way to spend that kind of money on looks for your car.

Sorry I didn't get a better pic of that camaro 2 posts up. Was having camera trouble and had a whole roll of film get screwed up on me. Don't know if the film speed was labled wrong or what.
I'm working on a 4th gen console and a custom radio housing right now. It'll be a little while before it's done though. Too many house projects to concentrate on the car.

in response to karstenkurtz, i think the dash looks cheap too but the kit dosent look japaneese. it looks itialian. look at the 550 maranello (sp?) or a testarosa. ive never seen a jap car come from the factory looking like that. and they way you want your car is so unoriginal. ive seen cowls TT2s and 91-92 Z spoiler on so many cars its starting to make me sick. but it thats how you like it go for it. i used to think it was great too until i noticed that 1 out of every 5 thirdgens i saw looked exactly like that. and how they werent as fast as they looked.

T-5 tranny. thank god, i couldnt stand an LG4 auto.
Plans for an LT1,
dual flowmaster exaust,
& a pounding stereo.
but its gotta wait for my Vette to be a badarse before it will be.
well karstenkurtz, everyone has their own opinions. i dont know why everyone says the K1 kit looks 'cheap ' .. look at the stock interior with no curved surfaces and plastic pieces. Do you think chevy spent alot of money making it look good? NO! the only interiors that dont look 'cheap' are BMW and Mercedes interiors with leather everywhere and lots of curves. I think that pic is just a bad example ... if they used quality interior paint and a better color choice I think alot more people would like it.
And you gotta remember, most of those JAP MOBILES that you talk about are trying to look like european rally cars ... thats the style they are going for. so no, this dosnt look like a japanese car, it looks like a european car that alot of japanese cars try to look like. I have always liked the looks of imports and not untill recently have I really started to give props to the performance those small lil engines can output.
I would do mods like you've listed but from what i've seen a billion people have already done that stuff and its just not as cool anymore. I plan to do the complete K1 Evo kit, a nice set of Y2K vette wheels, a really really nice chameleon paintjob, no embelems, and have it powered by a TT chevy 350. To each his own right? Have a nice day

CrazyHawaiian- I think you've spent too much time in the sun man! You're nuts!
I almost lost my mind just stripping down and doing a repaint, that kit's gonna be hell to finish.
Seriously though, good luck to ya, it'll look bad as hell when you get it done, I'd love to see some pics. If it even looks half as sweet as I envision it, it'll still be a show stopper.

Also, I think what is bad about this pic is the red looks funky, like its a bad quality picture...looks like reddish-orange velvet or something...Also I've seen some very cool-looking red/black shift ***** that might be a good addition to this style interior, and won't look cheap (IMO) like the red one in the picture does. Anyway, I'm gonna try and do a photoshop edit to this pic sometime soon and get it looking a bit better. I'll definitely post it when I do.

CrazyHawaiian:
I would be interested in hearing what you thing of the quality of the k-1 kit.
I've been thinking of using it on my 84 Z28.

That's not a Camaro. It's a kit car called Evoluzion based on the F-Body platform.

Thanks for the support Richie!! I really cant wait to get the K1 kit ... but in reality it will be a while before I get that exterior kit ... i just cant justify the cost right now (i can either get a 94 s10 daily driver truck, or that kit ... and right now i'd take the truck) but when I do, believe me im gonna take a million pictures. The interior kit is a different story ... I plan to have it installed within a couple of months (@ most 3). Jiffy asked how much can you change a camaro and still call it a camaro? I think as long as the frame is still a camaro frame then you can call it a camaro (this even applies legally) ... modifying the body or engine does not change what type of car it is (and i hope nobody would ever put a ford engine in a camaro!! yikes!). Does putting the TypeR sticker on an Acura Integra make it a TypeR?? NO! Take this picture for example (sorry I know this dosnt have anything to do with interior but i wanna show you guys this) ...
Here is a Ford F150 with a Lincon Navigator front end conversion .... this is still a ford ...
im the meantime, trying to edit that interior pic ... if photoshop would work ... zZzZzZz heheh
