Hood Springs????

I just ordered my cowl hood and it should be here in a few days. Now my question is will the stock hood shocks be to much for the glass hood or will I need to get new ones or even springs. I checked the archives and couldn't find anything, even though I know I've seen this post before. Thanks in advance!!!

There was a post before where a feww people with glass hoods used weaker hood shocks from junk yards. They were too weak to hold a steel hood, but strong enough for the glass.

Or you can do what my friend did on his Monte SS. He ditched the latch, hinges and shocks. Put four pins to hold the hood down. When he wants to work on his car he takes the pins out, and lifts the hood clear off the car. Talk about room to work!!

I eliminated my shocks completely. I use 3/8" stainless steel tubing. Crush the ends together, grind the rough edges off, polished, and drilled a 5/16" hole. They fit right on the stud where the shock used to mount. Looks great, works well and very low cost.

Greg, I'll try to post a picture on this thread a little later tonight. Meanwhile, I took a piece of 3/8" stainles tubing and put the ends in a vice with towels on the vice so I didn't mar them up. Crushed about 1 1/2" flat and the ground the corners down so it had a rounded finish. Then drilled a 5/16" hole in each end and they mount right on the stud where the old shocks fit. I love them for the car shows. If a wind kicks up it holds the glass hood in place very well. Like I said I'll try to get the pics up later.

Here's the pic. It's not the best clarity, but should show you what I mean. I have two sets, one is 11.5 inches long and the other is 13.5 inches long. The longer ones hold the hood open to about the factory height. I use the shorter ones at the car shows.

I got a pair of worn hood struts that someone was throwing away. They worked prefect for my glass hood.

Now has anybody used the stock hood struts or are they too much for the glass hood? Mine look and feel like band new ones. Also, I remember somebody stating that there are hood struts disigned specifically for glass hoods. If this is true does any body have any idea where to get them? Thanks!

Officially your not supposed to use stock hood dampeners(I think that's the proper term) with fiber glass hoods, but I've gotten away with it using a twin turbo hood. The dampeners were less than a year old when I put them on the hood too, so I was nervous, but they have worked pretty well even at full strength. I just try to be gentle whenever I open and close the hood.
If you do use dampeners with a fiber glass hood I'd recommend getting 2 hood pins in the front to help keep the light hood steady.
My hood tended to flap a little when going down the highway till I put some $20 chrome hood pins on last month.

You can see how my stock dampeners are attached on readers rides, click on the under-the-hood pic.

Thanks to all for the info, I guess I'll just have to be carefull with the hood. I was just nervous about breaking a $400 hood in half. Also, I already have the hood pins, I figured that's what the hood would do so I got some before I bought the hood. Thanks again.
