Electric Door Mirror

The glass in my drivers door mirror has started 'floating' about in the cowl. I can't see any ways to get behind it to fix it. Anybody help?
Thanks - Clive

'82-'85 electric mirrors have a screw mounting the mirror backing plate to the motor housing in the center. The bad news is you have to break the mirror glass to remove the screw. The good news is most good Auto Parts stores such as Pep Boys have replacement mirror glass for a lot less that from the dealer. Unfortunately the passenger side lettering isn't as sharp and clear as on genuine GM ones. Later '87-'92 style had a plastic ball that mounts to a socket in the center of the motor housing so it can be removed without breaking the glass. In your case, since it has a screw attaching it, that is probably not why it is wobbling. There are two plastic serrated strips that go into the motor allowing the mirror to adjust. One of these may have over traveled and just needs to be reinserted while actuating the mirror switch to pull it in. If it has broken you will have to get a new backing plate from a pick-a-part (and new mirror glass). BTW, the book shows a separate p/n for the '86 model year and I'm not familiar with what it looks like. Another possibility is the metal frame that mounts the motor assy to the mirror pod may have broken or come loose. Again you will need to get a new one from PAP and new glass to fix it. Good luck, Lon
