Getting ready for a rebuild on a 91 RS

I just bought an RS with no engine or transmission. This is my third thirdgen (I had an 82 and an 86). The 82 was T Tops and I foolishly got rid of it in about 2002. The 86 was a Sport Coupe without T Tops and that made me realize how much I liked having T Tops. When the engine blew in 2011, we were renting and couldn't keep it parked. I wasn't so sad to see it go as I was the 82.

I saw a mechanic with a Camaro last year and I asked about it. It was a 91 RS with T Tops. He was planning on removing the engine and transmission, and was going to junk the rest. I told him I was interested. I think he thought I just wanted a car to buy and drive right away because he said the body was in bad shape and the T Tops leaked. I told him it didn't matter because I wanted to tear it down to the frame and rebuild it from there.

A few days ago he finally pulled the engine and tranny and it's sitting in my driveway. I plan on cleaning out my garage and pulling everything from the interior to exterior that is possible and rebuild it the best I can.

After a simple wash, my wife liked this better in our driveway.

I don't know why he was going to scrap it either. He only took 300 for it, which I think is a great price. I see Camaros, in worse shape than this, still driving around where I live!

There's minor damage to the driver's side front headlight area, but nothing a new bumper cover, new hood and a big wrench can't fix. The carpet is in good shape and so are the rear seats, they just need to be cleaned. The dash pad has one crack in it and the rest of the dash is clean.

Found your thread from link on Blake's. See you know what's up with yours. Should get a real nice car when you are done.

You car looks great! It's nice to see so many people take their time with their cars. I've never had that luxury until now.

I'm going to take a couple of years and do this right, removing as much rust from every single piece with a sand blaster and electrolysis. I've always wanted one that looked new and that would be the only way to do it.

I just have to clear out my garage to put my car in and start tearing it apart. Whoever had my house before put in a long workbench. This thing is attached to the wall and must be 8 feet long and two feet deep. This takes way too much elbow room out of a one car garage. After I clear some space, that's the next thing to go. I'm going to cut it down into a smaller, portable workbench.

Thanks. I know Thirdgens are going up in price now, so I was lucky he just wanted to get rid of it.

Looks like a nice start for a good price. I got my 92 in my small a** garage last week and have been able to get a bit more stuff done as well. I love the looks of the 91/92 RS's so much so it's cool to see someone else working on one.

I love the looks of it, too. I like the dashboard change, my other two Camaros had the old style.

As you can see in the pictures I have a small garage, too. I feel your pain! I have to remove that huge, useless workbench before I can start anything. It's almost as tall as the Camaro!
