Hot air from console vents

I am hoping that you guy's may be able to help me.

I am getting hot air coming from the vents in the console. I don't know if this is coming from the heater core or somewhere else.

When I move the heat controls to the vents I get cold air from outside so I don't know where the hot air is coming from. Could it be coming up the manual shift area or from the engine compartment?

Thanks.

Some year, I don't know when, the government made all the manufactuers switch to a venting system that always blew air out of somewhere on the car to keep fumes from building up. This is the source of the hot air. This also explains why if you don't wash the inside of your windows for a while, they will have a fine film of dust.
