broken speedometer
broken speedometer
okay, I bought my fbird a couple months ago with a broken speedometer and I'd like to fix it. It's an 82 Trans Am, so it's not electrical, but I still dont have the slightest clue where to start to get it working again... any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

82s donn't have VSS as far as I know. Does the needle move at all? Could be a broken cable. Check both the upper and lower. More likely is that the plastic speedometer gear in the tranny is broken. Do you have an automatic or standard? If it's an automatic, than it is probably the 200c, and replacing the speedo gear in the tranny requires pulling the whole thing apart, because that tailshaft can't be taken apart separately.
