Dash gauge swap

Ok I'm so utterly confused I dont know which way to go. I have a 1984 Z28 that is getting some major revamping. Already she is sporting custom paint, IROC nose and hood, and 91-92 ground effects. Im having the interior redone soon as well.
Here is my problem. I want to upgrade from the 85 MPH speedo to the 120 or 140 speedo. I have the full gauges now, but when I get into it and bury the speedo in third I would really like to know exactly how fast I'm going.
Now I have been told yes I can swap the whole gauge cluster out of an IROC or Z without any problems. I also have been told I cannot swap the gauges out and that I will fry my wiring and computer. I was told I must swap only the speedo head.
So if any of you other Camaro owners can help me out I would appricate it greatly. I can find the gauges easily enough around here from 85-89 cars for under $75.
Thanks!

I did this swap from an 85 lg4 cluster w/ the 85 mph speedo, to an 86 cluster with the 140 mph speedo. Also, i was changing from the cable driven speedometer to an electronic. At the same time, i did my manual th350 to a t5 swap, which came with the electronic VSS. THe pinout on the back of both gauge clusters were different. I used a shop manual fron the 82 to figure out all the wiring's functions, then pulled pins out of connectors and put them in the 86 location. Everything works fine now, the speedometer is accurate and everything. Its a pretty complicated task, but if you are up to it, its possible. Btw, this was between two trans ams, not camaros, but it should apply pretty much the same.
