Pretty sure my windshield gasket is leaking.

It's been raining a lot here on the weekends so that usually means no working on my car since I don't have a garage I go to mess with my car yesterday and notice about 1/2" of water sitting RIGHT ON TOP of my VIN tag...

The only place I can figure that it's getting in is behind the windshield gasket, especially since it looks like a hack job to begin with. Is there somewhere I can buy new gasket and do it right?

Re: Pretty sure my windshield gasket is leaking.

I'd recommend letting the professionals handle this one -- most windshields break when removing them to change the seal, especially if you're not used to doing them.

Shop around, and expect to replace the windshield if you want to replace the seal. You should be able to get a new windshield installed with a new seal for under $200. Safelite is a good place to start as they are well known, they tend to do good quality work, and they will come to wherever your car is (you don't have to go to their shop). They also match prices if you find a cheaper windshield elsewhere.

Apparently some people on here are having trouble getting the correct outer seal with their new windshield -- a lot of them are coming with universal replacements that are nowhere near close to the originals. Firebird Central has the correct ones for around $10 + shipping http://www.firebirdcentral.com/1985_..._p/wea-252.htm

MIne is leaking water in at the top. I pulled up about 2" of that trim and couldnt get it to go back in whatsoever. I called a glass guy i know and he says that that trim has to be installed when windshield is installed.Soo to put in a new piece of trim you have to pay a auto glass shop to basically do a reseal of the windshield. Safelite wanted $80 smakers to do mine LoL , but my glass guy will do it for $20, but i have to meet up with the other side of town somewheres to do it.

Re: Pretty sure my windshield gasket is leaking.

The windsield is not sealed with a gasket but rather a bead of urethane.

Like others have said, it's better to let a glass shp do this one. There is a risk of breaking the windshield when removing it. Cured urethane is a PITA to work with and getting it to unseal is difficult, so I am told.

Get it sealed up soon because moisture in the dash area can cause all kinds of other headaches.

Re: Pretty sure my windshield gasket is leaking.

I found an independent auto glass guy local to me who said that, worst case scenario, he'd do the gasket and replacement windshield for $210+tax, or $100+ tax if the windshield doesn't break when he pulls it. Does that sound about right?

What about my pinch welds? Do i need to be worried?

That's not a bad price, just expect to pay the $210+Tx.That windshield is most likely going to crack after 28 yrs, mine did,but I didn't care I had already ordered it.The guy came to the house and did the job.
