ITS SO WET

Okay, I am getting tired of rain getting in my car when it, well, rains. I have all the weather strip, even a new ttop bar, none of which I have installed. My car doesn't like the rain, I don't like the rain. I have been forced to not install it due to the plans to paint in the near future. I need to keep the rain out, and frankly, I am just letting out steam in this post. But any advice would be cool.

Re: ITS SO WET

My car leaked like no other. It's got new weather stripping, adjusted windows, aswell as adjusted ttops. That didn't do much.

The problem was the drip rail. The peice on the outside edge of the TTOP. Not where the dot is, but the peice that is at the tip of the left arrow.

I got some electrical tape and taped parrell to the drip rail covering the crease for a short term fix. It took me 30 seconds. Its been four months and that electrical tape holds up fine with no more leaks.

I would suggest getting a bottle/Jug of water and slowly pouring it in certain areas in order to pinpoint your leak. Then it should be easy to fix that leak.

Some common causes of leakage in somewhat order from easiest to hardest fix
Mis-adjusted TTops (need to be angled down to create better seal)
Mis Adjusted windows(they need to be tilted inward to seal against weather stripping)
Weather Stripping

Re: ITS SO WET

Buggy's got some good advice.

Just throwing this in here for the heck of it, but if you've got a thick blanket or a tarp of any kind, just cover the T-Tops when you're not driving the car. Should minimize if not eliminate the water getting to the T-Tops.

Like I said, I have all new weather strip. The TTOP Bar is in bad shape. I cannot tell if the windows or Ttops are misaligned at this point in time.

I have the new ttop bar. But have to wait to put that on too. /sigh

Re: ITS SO WET

It would be a good idea to pinpoint the leak by pouring water on them. The bar looks rusted enough to allow leaking from there, but we don't know for sure.

A friend of mine had leaking problems on his 89 firebird years ago. As a temp fix, he ran a bead of black silicone under the edge of the Ttop seal. It pushed the rubber up tighter against the edge of the top and stopped the leak.

Meaning that it could leak from multiple places, or one or the other. If we could pinpoint the source of the leaking, we will have a better idea of what to replace (or seal up with electrical tape).

Ill have to take a look tomorrow. On a side note, do you think it would be worth the time to pull the trans and engine to get the car sandblasted for 200 bucks?

Well, its not so much the RUST thats the problem. Its more of the fact the shop I took it to, to get painted said it had to be taken down to the metal. They were gonna charge 5500 for the body work and paint and it was out of my range. Only part with rust is the TTop region, and a little on the underbody.

Take it down to the metal? I don't see how that's necessary if there is little rust and the body is in good condition. Would you mind posting some pics of your car? Also, do you plan on changing the color?

Yeah I am going from Sh1ty blue to black. The previous owner(s) have put a couple of bad coats of paint on. Here are a few pictures.

Fenders and Hatch need alignment as well.

In the end, I just want the 1000 dollars of weather strips, decals, and parts. To be installed. But I can't do any of them until I strip my damn car and paint it.

Well, if you are willing to sand down the car down yourself, past the crappy coats of blue, that should save you quite a bit considering the body shop won't have to do that. It also might be easier to just have the paint blasted off down to the metal, like you said. I would ask the shop what their estimate would be if you brought it to them bare. Then they would only have to do minor prep, primer, and paint. I am not as experienced in body work as others are on this site, so take my advice with caution lol.

I would also suggest going to a pull-a-part or scrapyard and seeing if you can find yourself a rust-free T-Top bar. New ones are real expensive and the metal underneath the bar can spread rust. Check out this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...-top-rust.html
