my camaro is an automatic and I need to take the round shift **** off of the shifter to take the panel off below it. The **** has a little crack in it and I didn't want to force it so I need to know how it's supposed to come off.

You have to pull the button straight up and out, then remove the circlip inside. There's a special tool, but you may be able to get it out with a screwdriver or a couple awls. After that, the **** just slides off.
