This is a fairly common problem with our cars. Search the archives, and you'll no doubt come up with the required info.

There should be a vacume canister on the driver's side of the firewall in the engine compartment with 2 vacume lines going into it. It's about 6 inches long and about 3" around. The upper vacume line goes to your HVAC controls and the lower line draws vacume. Play around with the vacume sources until it works. Mine was messed up, so I just connected the upper line straight to vacume off of my intake. If this doesn't help, do a search on the tech board for HVAC or ac controls

Have you tried looking under the dash for the vent shafts that lead to the middle of the dash. They are black and look like square tubes.

Defrost is the default setting if no vacume signal is supplied.

i looked for the canister on the firewall and didn't see it. I saw something that resembled the description that was under the wiper motor but there were no vacuum fittings.

Chances are the HVAC control broke itself.
Best fix is go to a junkyard & get a 'new' one for around $5-10. The vents are controlled by a vacuum diverter valve/switch on the backside of the HVAC controls.

The floor vent is the 'default' if the controls are off.
