I've got a '91 RS that I took the stock shifter out of to replace with an aftermarket one. All it took to get it out was a screwdriver. There's a little U clip in the front of it. I don't know how yours is held on though. E-mail me if your interested in my stock one.

for your current one, just give it a good tug, if that doesn't work pull out the button and you'll see a c-clip, take that off and then pull the **** off. In order to upgrade to the new *****, you'll need to replace the whole shifter assembly, it's about 4 bolts and a couple cables. should be a direct swap.
does anyone have a url to some NICE auto shifter *****. i seen two so far, their like a T handle with the push button on the left side of the T. only problem was that it came in wood grain or carbon fiber..ewww
I put a Carbon Fiber/Billet shift **** on mine. I got it from one of the local speed shops. It is actually made for a r!ce burner but it looks cool on our cars. It has set screws that hold it on. I will see if I can snap a pic and post it.
Why not use the auto shifter from some of the newer GM models? IIRC, they should all fit up, or only require some minor tooling to accomplish the fit. I'll go look up some part numbers at work today, and get back to you guys tonite.
