Convert owners help me with weatherstrip Ques!
I just got my hands on a NEW original convertible #5 bow weatherstripping. This is the one on the back of the top under the rear window. It is the one that seals the top to the rear decklid.
My original torn weatherstripping ends are flopping in the wind at freeway speeds with the A/C on. About 3-4 inches worth. Not cool.
The new weatherstripping has a molded in L bracket on the ends of the weatherstripping to attach it with screws. It appears that my old weatherstripping had this bracket but was torn out of the weatherstripping. There is no small L bracket attached in that area that could have come from the weatherstrip ends. There looks like a threaded hole in the convertible main rail that could be used for this purpose. Where exactly does this little bracket get attached to the frame? I DO NOT want to mess up my new weatherstripping.
Lets take the drivers side. The area is where the rear edge of the window meets the door and this area meets the quarter panel.
There is the side windows trailing weatherstrip, the weatherstrip frame, ragtop material & ragtop frame vertical main rail.
Someone has gooped up the area with black rubber silicone to try and hold the weatherstrip in place. It looks like there is a threaded hole in the ragtop main rail.
Does the little weatherstrip bracket go on the front side of the rail or the back side
or somewhere else? I DO NOT want to stretch out the new weatherstrip by attaching it in the wrong spot and worse, tearing it. This area is right where the top is doing its pivoting thing when you put it up or down. Probably why the original tore there. Does just putting the top up and down tear it up there? If I attach the weatherstrip ends in the threaded hole I am talking about, lifting the back of the top vertically to open the decklid will put the weatherstrip ends bent at a 90 degree angle. This looks like it would make the weatherstrip tear in no time at all.
I sure hope somebody can follow this and is willing to answer my questions. Thanks in advance

https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/000563.html This is for part numbers if you want to change the weatherstripping.
The best place for you to find the other vert owners is to go, post, and search on the histo/resto board. Both moderators are vert owners. The majority of us frequent there although Chevy Ken, Lonsal and I tend to hit most of the boards.

As far as the details on the location of parts I can't really help you. My top is 12 years old and the parts are really worn, torn, and rigged so they work. Luckily, in a few weeks I get a new top put on my car so I hope they do a great job.

Thanks for the reply 89RagTopRS. I don't need the part numbers but appreciate the post anyway. I have the GM Chevrolet Camaro Parts & Illustration Catalog 1982-1992 revised May 1992. I have every part number of parts that were still available in May 1992 for the thirdgens. Also have the 1989 GM Camaro Shop Manual.
I will move my request for info to a different board then. Thanks
